How are people coping if you live in a flat

I feel sorry for everyone in this situation without a garden, especially with small children. How are you coping day to day?

I am in a flat with 2 DC 8 & 3. It is actually quite hard if I'm honest although we enjoy homely time we always go somewhere outside at weekends and school holidays. We are going for walks outdoors about every other day, sometimes a but less as there's just too many people walking around here and it's impossible not to cross paths with people. I can't help thinking how happy they'd be if they could pop in and out of a garden as they please. I feel really bad for them but they're doing so well at keeping themselves entertained.
I don't really like going out through the communal hallways either as our neighbours on our level aren't keeping social distancing and have had friends round or go out to meet with friends 😒

@Sanblasamor that sounds so hard, especially with neighbours so close in the corridor and then it’s everything they have touched, hopefully this won’t go on to long Flowers

Fine. Because the alternative is worse. You get used to anything in time. The first week or so was definitely the hardest. (I'm not in the UK)
I haven't left the flat since 12/3 when dp was furloughed. He does the shopping now.

We live in a flat with young children and in our area many many people do. In fact I’d say more don’t have gardens than do. There’s a large park and although it’s patrolled by police I’m pleased to say they seem to be using their common sense. For example, we are there everyday with the children and lots of other people are there sitting on benches letting the children run around, play cricket, football , do nature hunts etc ( all 2 metres away of course) and they are not stopping people. IMO it’s so important for everyone but especially children to get good outside time everyday. After all, even at school they get 20min break and hour for lunch outside.

Have those with kids in flats considered vitamin D supplements? Or multi vitamins? Not as a complete replacement for time outside (which we are still allowed!) But to make up for the fact many kids are getting less than ideal?
I am actually quite surprised the government have not addressed this yet... I worry about the re-emergence of diseases like rickets down the line, especially for children with darker skin tones. And of course vit D and general health and fitness is important in fighting off respiratory illness.
I have a very small garden but really feel for those in flats. Even with the garden Dd is getting less outside time than normal, partly due to colder weather (North Scotland)
We have to persuade her to come outside, whereas normally at school and after school club she would be running around too much to notice the cold!
It is so important to get some outside time if possible though...
It's why I can't agree with the "complete lockdown no one leaves their home at all even for exercise!" brigade.

I'm in a flat with DS. We are going out every day for an hour for exercise. We do have to walk to the supermarket too as I don't own a car so we do get a bit of outside time.

It's not too bad. I've got the windows thrown open at the moment for fresh air.

TheCanterburyWhales · 05/04/2020 09:57

Yes, re Vit D
I take it anyway for bones but DD has been taking it since lockdown.

if you can eat oily fish (canned tuna isn't that good please note but canned salmon or mackerel is OK) fresh tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines that is helpful, nuts, & most margarines & bread & cereals are fortified - when you go outside

I have teens / preteens and our flat is quite big so that helps, listening to birdsong from the window just now from the trees outside, it is Ok but would be harder if they were small. They just want to stay on e.g. Minecraft, but do try and get them out for a walk..and yes take vitamin D.
