What will be the first thing to go back to normal?

I expect a very very gradual return over many months. Initially small family gatherings, 8 people max at home. Restaurants, pubs and shops to stay closed for a lot longer and schools to be right at the end.

Lord knows. I’m guessing social distancing will be with us for a long while.

Qasd · 05/04/2020 08:55

I do not know but I hope they prioritise giving kids an education over the rest of us getting a Big Mac!

Seriously I think they will go to a phased return if schools, certain year groups certain days but I do not believe they will be “last” even away from the education point it’s impossible to get people to work while the kids remain off (which is why they are open for key worker children now).

Last thing will be office people now “working from home” allowed back with sport and other large gathering also pretty late on.

Guyonhere1 · 05/04/2020 17:35

Probably won’t happen for a while, but hopefully sport returns soon.

EssentialHummus · 05/04/2020 17:44

I reckon football, though without crowds watching.

HRH2020 · 05/04/2020 17:49

I think small indoor social gatherings would be first

Production and anything to get the economy going.
Shops (with only a few allowed in at a time etc) restaurants (fewer tables, no big parties)
Factories
Logistics

Oooh, sport with no crowd... that seems possible.

I'm very sceptical about schools being early on in the scheme of things. Anyone who has been in a large secondary comprehensive corridor between lessons will understand just how much opportunity for spread there is. If you see the pictures of people rammed onto the tubes in London, it's very similar. Those seem to be the scenarios we should really be avoiding.

Restaurants will re-open fairly quickly I think because people miss them so much. Some will have gone out of business though. People will visit each other, those working from home will return to work.

Yes!

First things will be work that cannot be done from home - construction, manufacturing etc
Schools may then semi open for children of these employees as well as key workers
Then social gatherings at home but not including the shielded group
Then other shops and restauants, cafes and other social spaces and schools open more widely for all
Then large events and gatherings
Lastly international flights depending on policies of other countries

Sweetpotatoaddict · 05/04/2020 19:29

I really really hope we prioritise children’s education over pubs reopening. I also hope people are looking at the psychological effect of all of this on our young people. If schools don’t return till after the summer, would it make sense for them to return to where they were when all this began rather than moving up years and onwards?

meow1989 · 05/04/2020 19:34

I think maybe, and would like it would like it to be, small family gatherings indoors allowed first, for us this is the hardest part of lock down.

Delatron · 05/04/2020 19:37

I agree with prioritising children’s education, social and mental wellbeing over sport and pubs. I hope they’re not last.

flutterby31 · 05/04/2020 19:43

@Sweetpotatoaddict that's all very well but a) lots of teachers will have left for a variety of normal reasons (maternity, relocation etc) so children wouldn't have "their" teacher and b) teachers get moved around year groups regularly.
