Are University students still planning on Uni next year?

I work in a role which relies on students.

With the COVID19 crisis I'm thinking that maybe some students will maybe take a year out until
things are more settled.

Any ideas?

The students I know are expecting to be back in September.

Dd is awaiting A level grades. She has applied through UCAS and got good offers that she was pleased with. I think she will achieve the grades but now thinks she might take a year out anyway. Things are so up in the air for her and her friends.

I work at a HEI and there is talk of pushing back the start date of next academic year or carrying on in virtual mode.

I think any parent would be worried about freshers though, they get freshers flu at the best of times

DD is working on the basis she'll be going back for her second year early September..

DH has 2 plans. Plan A students back in September. Plan B students back in January.

G3m81 · 04/04/2020 22:54

I've got a lot of first and second year students back in work with me and everyone of them is planning on going back. They are unsure of what's happening with exams but they are keen to go back as soon as they are allowed.

I am also worried about students taking a year out as DD wants X coarse the following year. So any deferring will reduce her opportunities.

I see both sides and don’t blame them in the slightest for differing. I know I would want DD to take a year out of it was her turn this year.

I am worried about this. DC is mid gap year and due to start uni in Sept.

DD is also mid gap year. She has just cancelled her first choice that she had accepted as she has changed her mind and prefers her second choice. Is currently reapplying as I write, for her second choice. But I really don't know if it is realistic to think of going at all this September. She's not exactly a self motivated learner and will struggle if it is virtual classes. Plus it's a lot of money to sit at home on your laptop!

As it happens she got a job in the hospital where I work, as an HCA in theatres. She's been really enjoying this, she's learnt loads and it's been great for her confidence. I really think the whole job market and people's priorities are going to change so much post Covid, she should stay where she is with a secure job and income, and possibilities of a future career path. But she sees HCAs who have done the same job for twenty years (and do it very well and are much valued) and seems to feel a terror of being stuck where she is if she doesn't go to university, plus I think she feels a peer pressure to be doing what her friends are doing, going to university. I think she's behind the times on this in the light of current events.
