BBC reporting a 5 year old has died of coronavirus. Is this the first in the world? I thought no one under 10 had passed away.

The less vulnerable, I said. Like transmission of chickenpox amongst nursery and primary school aged is considered to be acceptable, rather than the NHS paying for the whole population to be vaccinated. Even though a very small number of children- even occasionally apparently healthy ones- will die from chickenpox.

Thanks @AmelieTaylor and @MynameisJune. I've just been treated to a rendition of Let it Go! Pretty sure we'll be discharged in the morning.

Hmm I take it back about the media hype then. That is a decent responsible DM article.

The six week old US baby was in hospital anyway with a serious bowel condition. He/she tragically died of a bowel obstruction.

don't think my DD is at anymore risk on her ward than I would be in the supermarket.

This is probably true...in fact perhaps safer as hospital staff are so careful about hygiene anyway and all the training and infastructure is already in place to minimise the risk of any infection, plus the fact that the ward was "understocked" with patients. Good luck, hope your daughter is doing OK..

For perspective 2 children die every week on the road
Is horrible to hear about but try not to panic
The guardian does good calming statistical info which helps

Incredibly sad and one can only imagine the grief the poor family are experiencing. Awful.

Instances of children dying of cv are thankfully still vanishingly rare, although I appreciate that will be no consolation to the family of this particular child.

Puddlelane123 · 04/04/2020 18:59

As others have pointed out, it is also important to note the distinction between a child dying with coronavirus and a child dying from coronavirus. No less tragic but very different in terms of implications for the general risk posed to otherwise fit and healthy children.

Iris243 · 04/04/2020 19:06

I think the only thing we can say about this is that it is very tragic and sad.

I hope his family were able to be with him at the end.

Any child’s death is a tragedy.
Every two minutes a child dies of malaria.

It really is worth looking at the detail on a country by country basis of all cause mortality over a long period of time. There are cyclical flu cycles almost annually that cause excess deaths but so far this year, the spike has been significantly lower than in previous years. It looks like instead of the annual flu spike we will be hit with the CV spike instead but so far.... this is not of the magnitude of the flu seasons of the past three years. And so far the under 5's have not shown an increase in the number of deaths compared to the baseline long term average number of deaths, neither in Europe as a whole or in the worst affected countries.

So yes, people die, and some of them are young but even in Italy, in February and March the vast majority of deaths are in people over 70 and the vast biggest causes of death are ischemic heart disease and cancer. (Corinavirus is the 8th most significant cause of death in Italy in the past 2 months.)
