Stupid Q: re Dont garden or spring clean

So, green waste isnt being collected.
While obviously it would be better to recycle the bushes I want to prune, why am I being advised against it? We have approx 3/4 of a wheely bin each week sitting empty. Why cant I just put the cuttings in the bin?

We compost fruit/veg peal, and grass cuttings, but this stuff is not what I want in the compost in big quantities.

Is the advice about not having far too much stuff, or about not putting garden clippings in the general bin?

I presume because garden clippings in an unemptied green bin will be disgusting by the time green waste collection recommence.

Mamamia456 · 04/04/2020 15:03

Well they are still taking the garden bins in our area. Which part if the country are you in?

BeetrootRocks · 04/04/2020 15:05

They've stopped it in our borough as well

Prob don't stuff loads of grass cuttings in as will go a bit squashy but can't see why not put dry stuff in.

AnnieOH1 · 04/04/2020 15:07

We've had green bins suspended but just been advised to put in regular black general waste bin.

KittenVsBox · 04/04/2020 15:07

I'm talking about putting it in the bin that gets emptied every week. Green waste normally goes in sacks. I wont do that.

CheriLittlebottom · 04/04/2020 15:08

If it's in a bin bag who will know?

KittenVsBox · 04/04/2020 15:08

Ah, xposts. That's what I'm thinking of doing, Annie

Our council are still collecting garden waste bins fortnightly. But that is just the one bin, once a fortnight.

Doesn’t really help with tidying the garden up for spring. We would normally take several loads of garden waste to the local tip - but obviously they are closed at the moment.

LIZS · 04/04/2020 15:12

Garden waste still being collected locally.

GameSetMatch · 04/04/2020 15:18

You can put green waste in your non recycling bin, the bin wagons came on Thursday and just dumped everything in the one wagon, all the cardboard bins, all the plastic bins and all the non recycling rubbish. Seems like protecting the earth is at the bottom of the lists at the moment.

BeetrootRocks · 04/04/2020 15:18

With the pressure on services I think bagging it in normal refuse for landfill is not a very good idea.

cornflakegirl · 04/04/2020 15:19

Our council letter said don't fill up your black bin in case they need to suspend collections.

safariboot · 04/04/2020 15:25

Who's said don't garden?

I'd be in the garden now if I hadn't cut my finger yesterday.

But I agree that garden and recyclable waste in the general waste bin should be minimised. I'd say leave grass clippings on the lawn, put weeds and prunings in the garden waste bin.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 04/04/2020 15:28

Our garden and food waste is no longer being collected. We are therefore limiting the amount of gardening we do because I don't want to either leave it in our garden waste bin or fill up the general waste with it. Food waste will have to go in the general bin but we're being cautious about wasting food anyway, so there isn't much of it.

Murinae · 04/04/2020 15:31

Our garden waste collections have just started up again.

KittenVsBox · 04/04/2020 15:41

Our council have warned about gardening, but also here, for example.

I can see the point about collections having to be cancelled, so will perhaps prune a bins worth of clippings the day before the rubbish is due to go. I can compost grass, so that is dealt with. Thank you.

Our local council has said they'd like everyone to really minimise the amount of waste put into all bins as it will mean lighter loads for the bin crews and a lighter load in turn means they can do more bins quicker. They are working with reduced crews and trying to get to as many households as scheduled still - but if everyone has a big clear out or fills their bin full of garden waste, then the lorry will become full before they get to everyone.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/04/2020 15:50

You either have to store it at home or put it in your non recyclable waste if they're not collecting your garden waste. Our non recycling is incincinerated so no landfill anyway.

They can't expect people to not garden at this time of year, they have the time, it's good for mental health and it's going to lead to gardens being overgrown and unmanageable in the coming months if not kept up with.

I don't know why they've stopped so much of waste collection, its outside work that's fairly essential and easy to do while social distancing. There's going to be a massive fly tipping problem if people can't get rid of the waste. If they're short staffed due to illness etc, they could use all the private waste collectors who've been laid off as no restaurants open.

TheoriginalLEM · 04/04/2020 15:58

Our garden waste collections have been suspended. DP in his wisdom decided to cut down two massive bushes, i mean 10ft bloody things. The whole front garden was full of branches.

Before lockdown he bought a garden Mulder - I made a Hmm face.

All that wood is now sitting in about twenty half size bin bags waiting to go to the tip when it opens or be spread on our garden.

Screw fix sell them.and I believe you can do contactless purchase

LIZS · 04/04/2020 16:00

There already has been a noticeable increase locally in fly tipping since the council sites closed. Are hippo bags or skip firms still operating? Commercial waste sites are still open. What that report suggests is that you keep the garden/clear out waste you generate. Do you have space for a compost heap?

TheGreatWave · 04/04/2020 17:03

I'm getting a skip, we have an old shed to get rid of, but most of it will be garden waste. Far too much for a compost heap and I cannot not do it because otherwise the garden will be completely overrun.

Belindabelle · 04/04/2020 18:00

We only get our general household bin emptied once a month.

The garden, cardboard, plastic/metal and glass bins are no longer being emptied. Small food caddy still being emptied weekly.

The refuse collectors cannot socially distance in a bin lorry. One person is driving the lorry and one or two people are following behind in separate vehicles to empty the bins.

Belindabelle · 04/04/2020 18:05

All our recycling centres are closed to private individuals so you can't even dispose of anything yourself. Not sure whats happening with skips.

OrchidFlakes · 04/04/2020 18:11

Could you have a bonfire with the garden waste? We and our neighbors have pooled our waste behind our garden (arranges by text before anyone gets over excited) and we’ll burn it either late tomorrow or on Monday.
Our green bin wast collection has been suspended but all others still being collected.
We did have to get permission from the rural estate we live on to burn but that was taken care of with a quick email.

JustVisiting9 · 04/04/2020 18:53

My council have just suspended green bin collections. They've said that 30% of the bin collectors are currently not at work so they are prioritising the black bins and recycling. They've asked everyone to try to minimise rubbish - but they're already struggling. They were out this morning catching up on bins that they weren't able to empty last week.

My plan is to start home composting. Sadly this won't be ready in time to help with my other problem, which is a lack of compost!
