Is sun cream an essential?

My DC have bad eczema and can only get their sun cream from boots, is it classed as an essential or not? My nearest boots is 20 min drive 🥴

@Wolfiefan well yes. But I'm kind of arguing the toss that sunshine is physically and emotionally good for people. I'm just surprised anyone (like you said you were) would advocate staying indoors on a beautiful day. When it's been freezing and horrible for ages 🤷🏻‍♀️
I'm in London btw. It's nice but I don't think your average person would burn today...

HT96 · 04/04/2020 14:05

@Wolfiefan I will be going to Sainsbury's next door for food to so don't worry I am not 100% an idiot 😄 I just asked as I don't know whether boots have sectioned the sun cream of in store!

Disclaimer: I realise not everyone is lucky enough to have a garden. I wasn't advising a trip to the beach Smile

HT96 · 04/04/2020 14:07

@MiaowMix what I would give for a trip to the beach 😥 the sand pit in the garden will have to do!

If everyone stops going out in the sun, we'll see an increase in Vitamin D deficiency related problems.
Getting sun cream, especially as part of a bigger shopping trip, sounds like an essential to me.

Wolfiefan · 04/04/2020 14:11

You don’t have to sit out for long enough to burn to get vit d.
And mental health? Personally I would like to spend the day walking the dogs on the beach. It’s not walking distance from my house. So I won’t. Because it’s not essential.

MiaowMix · 04/04/2020 14:11

@HT96 ditto.
I really really believe in the power of vitamin D tho ☀️

confusednortherner · 04/04/2020 14:18

Our Boots is only open for pharmacy and associated items, are others open to buy toiletries?

kateybeth79 · 04/04/2020 14:23

If the sun is out, even if it's overcast, you need suncream. I'm sunbathing at the moment and I'm roasting so thankful for my factor 50! Unless you cover every single part of your body, you won't be able to go outside for exercise without SPF with the weather how it is at the moment, so I would say it's a necessity.

HT96 · 04/04/2020 14:24

@confusednortherner I have no been to ours for a few weeks so not sure I am going to ring before I go though!

Sounds like a plan otherwise you might have a wasted journey. Hope you get sorted

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 04/04/2020 14:41

I’d say it’s an essential! However I’d order online.

And I would limit exposure and build up a bit of Vit D. I’m quite pale and try and get some sun expose before I slap on the SPF.

cologne4711 · 04/04/2020 14:43

Yes of course it is, it's a medical product to avoid you getting skin cancer.

And contrary to a pp, you DO need to go out in the sun for about 15 minutes a day to get your vitamin D.

In any event you can go out to buy whatever you like. If somewhere is selling it legally, you can buy it.

cologne4711 · 04/04/2020 14:46

Suncream isn't a toiletry item but in any event you can get it in the supermarkets. I know Boots have got a bit stupid about this. You can go in for eg shampoo but woe betide you if you pick up a lipstick if you are there. If you're doing a lot of conference calls for work you actually do need to pay a bit of attention to your appearance so I can't see the issue as long as you know what you want and don't spend half an hour deciding what colour.

MrsWhites · 04/04/2020 14:56

Definitely necessary if your child will burn without it. We need to think practically in this sort of situation, it is hard enough to children at the moment without being denied a bit of fun in the garden.

My son also has eczema and can only use the soltan sensitive, luckily we already have some in.

Betty1233 · 04/04/2020 14:59

Yes

Sammymommy · 04/04/2020 15:18

Wolfiefan you sound like you suffer from bad anxiety. Sure enough, going to buy a sun screen ONCE so the kids can play in the garden without burning or risking skin cancer is alright. OP, just need to pair it with a food trip. Or just make a trip to boots and make sure you buy everything you need, even if it would be in 2 or three weeks... That is why they are open.

There is no need for locking the kids in the basement just yet ;) . It's OK to go out for a walk once a day. It's Ok to go to the shop once in a while (as little as possible).

Wolfiefan · 04/04/2020 15:25

I do suffer from anxiety. But I’m not being overly anxious in this case.
The advice is to stay in. Only go out for essentials.
The OP presumably doesn’t need to travel that far to buy food. So it’s an extra non essential journey.
How many people have to die and how overwhelmed does the NHS have to be before people realise how little is actually essential?

confusednortherner · 04/04/2020 15:54

@cologne4711 you can't even get shampoo in ours it's medicine and that's it!

HT96 · 05/04/2020 12:45

@Wolfiefan I think you really need to get a grip, I went to boots they opened the door asked me what I wanted a lady (with 2 M distance) took me to sun cream I got what I wanted paid behind a screen then left, got my food shop and went home.

I went at 4pm last night so was not busy at all, you are going on like I want the sun cream to go for a day at the beach 🤦🏻‍♀️

People can go out and get what they need as long as they don't take the biscuit and keep distance from everyone else, then the virus can't spread!!

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 05/04/2020 13:21

Well they can. The question is should we go out more than is absolutely essential. The government say not. I’ve just realised I forgot things in this weekly shop. We will go without them.
I wonder if you’ll still think I’m exaggerating this and need to get a grip when you see how things evolve in the next couple of months.

TheGreatWave · 05/04/2020 14:02

Glad you got some OP. Sun is out lovely here even up north.

Peasinthefreezer · 05/04/2020 14:25

My son who has eczema uses Sunsense ultra for all the family. Can order on Amazon and if you are a prime customer will come tomorrow.
