Anyone been told to "anticipate furloughing"?

It's a busy time at work at the moment, we are all remote working. However all employees have been advised to anticipate furlough, and that as it becomes apparent that roles can be furloughed, they will.

There are some teams who have peak busy periods at other points in the year, ours is now, so I am hopeful that if furlough happens to me, it won't be until at least June.

But then also, I'm not really sure why I'm scared for furlough? From what I can see, redundancy can happen if furloughed or not, and that's my biggest worry - being laid off.

I don't think it's anything to be scared of. furloghing is not being laid off, it's effectively being given time off subsidised by the taxpayer during the quiet times when there isn't much work to do. there is the freedom to be brought back out of furlough when the next busy period comes around. the terms of the furloghing deal are that you so then definitely still have a job to go back to after all this is over - they cannot claim the furlough money and then make you redundant, the furlough money is there to prevent redundancies.

The can make you redundant after furlough. The company has to have reasonable expectations that they can recover.

Since we dont know how long this will last or how much business there will be left, it's impossible to say, for most businesses, that they can definitely recover.

My work are confident we can. But if lots if the businesses we service go under, recovery is less certain.

Op, my whole team was furloughed. Except me. As the manager I was jot in to keep it ticking over. They all feel they got the better deal. One of my staff pointed out that, apart from bills she has Hardly touched her wage. Being 20% down when she cant go anywhere, isnt a huge deal. She would rather be off than working.

Since I now have to do 4 peoples work, I can see her point.

Yeah there is an appeal to it Grin

I'm admin, but in a specific area. Two other admins each with their own areas. I'm thinking they could furlough two of the three and have one take up all three sets of duties. I don't know which one I would want to be!

Honestly, I wish I had been furloughed. Money would be tight, but we would have been ok. Mainly because my partner was made redundant. Not furloughed. But we decides to keep him homehihe has health problems and he watches ds while I work.

They kept the senior managers on because the CEO (my boss) doesnt really know my staff, the technical aspects or limitations of my team, I do alot of extra creating of reports that my team dont and if the shit hits the fan he would need me to sort it out. You can not work while furloughed, so it would fuck that up. And if the team member we left on was pissing about, he would have to manage it. Which he doesnt want to do. It would save the company more money to furlough me and have the government pay my 80% and keep one of my team.

On friday I worked 7am until 6pm and am anticipating the same every day this week. I usually finish at 4.30. But cant log off until at least 5.30 now as theres no one to run the inbox.

I have worked bits over the weekend too.

You are right in that if redundancy happens, being furloughed should not impact the process.

A big part of my admin is to do with projects (construction) which are dialling right back. I have other bits, but not enough for 40hours per week.

I’ve been furloughed. I was trying to work from home (with my husband) and look after our 18 month old- we had been doing it for 2 weeks and it was a massive juggle and to be honest I couldn’t imagine how I would do it longer term without completely destroying my mental health! I’m now furloughed starting from Monday and although I like working and it’s a an adjustment I think it will help our family a lot through these next difficult few months. Obviously I don’t want to be made redundant but I could have been made redundant anyway - I don’t think with the company I work for that is a particular worry but I could be wrong... can only do the best with the information at the time!
