Please share this on social media far and wide It is done by the sister of a friend of mine and is a very important message to get out there - it is to highlight the total lack of deaf interpreters along side covid updates in the news - there is a whole chunk of society lacking the information and support.

There is a petition but that won’t achieve results quickly enough - social media awareness just might

Thank you

Nicola Sturgeon seems to always have a deaf interpreter with nowadays.

PuckyMup · 04/04/2020 01:24

Yeah. But no-one in Downing Street does

There's always a sign language interpreter when I watch the briefings on BBC News.

islandofdoom · 04/04/2020 07:29

I will share this on social media.

brightyellowcardigan · 04/04/2020 07:33

During the 5 o'clock daily press briefings from Downing Street there is always a deaf interpreter.

Not sure about other times though.

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/04/2020 07:40

The official news briefings always have one.
If other programmes don't, then it's probably more useful to contact them directly than share it on your FB.

ilovecherries · 04/04/2020 07:45

All the official briefings have one, I think. In Scotland, the problem, certainly last week, was the the interpreter was actually in the room, so the camera kept cutting them out if they did zoom-ins. I did notice that. For the Downing Street one, they are cut into the screen so they are always visible.

mummabubs · 04/04/2020 07:58

Agree. Scotland and Wales both have BSL interpreters, England don't. It's is vital for those who use BSL as for the live transitions the subtitles either aren't there at all or lag quite far behind. I've seen there's a lady on Facebook who's doing BSL summaries and posting them but people shouldn't have to rely on this.

There’s no guarantee of the BBC interpreter as the lockdown announcement was made without one. The announcement was delayed and the team who insert the interpreter into the screen had finished work and sent the interpreter home.

If the interpreter is in the room (as in Scotland) there are less tech issues, and the interpreter will be on all channels and recordings.

Originally these announcements were made without an interpreter and had to be a campaign to get them there in the first place.
This was then done by removing the interpreter from a different news bulletin so Deaf people actually have less access to general news than before.
This is the Governments responsibility not the BBC.

This explains it in more detail.

It is probably as well the interpreter wasn't in the room with Boris, otherwise (s)he'd probably be in isolation now.

beautifulteeth · 04/04/2020 08:23

There is ALWAYS an interpreter present for the daily update at 5pm at Downing Street

If you're talking when the BBC news does reports etc from Downing Street, then you need to take it up with them...

TheDrsDocMartens · 04/04/2020 09:34

The interpreter is currently provided by BBC so governments own filming of statements (which is on social media etc) does not have one.

And its provided by the bbc at the expense of other interpreted news.
