Are people actually going out?

I live on a very quiet close and I've only been out once since lockdown started, to the supermarket, where everyone who was there was allowed to be. I haven't seen anyone flouting the rules, because I haven't been anywhere to witness it IYSWIM. But I've seen so many social media posts urging people to not break the rules, to stay home, to take it seriously etc. Are a lot of people still going out when they shouldn't? Have you witnessed this? Is it just a few people or a fair amount?

I think I’d have been better off not reading this thread.

WHY aren’t people getting the message FFS!

HedgeHogFoxBadger · 03/04/2020 22:04

I am a single parent to 3 children aged 17, 13 and 5. We have been working out at home and doing some walking however today I took my youngest out for a walk with the dog and when I got home I realized I couldnt then do my run I had planned.
The past few days I have seen some people out twice a day in the village. I ended up doing a workout at home

fourquenelles · 03/04/2020 22:05

I walk my dogs once every 2 days (fortunately they are old boys and prefer to sleep most of the time). I see a few couples promenading in the local park and a handful of other dog walkers. I have not ventured to the main road and shops since 15th.

The busiest person on the street is the local drug dealer. I have seen at least 10 people come to her door this evening Sad

Runwayqueen · 03/04/2020 22:06

Sadly I think people are still going out. I've been to Asda once since lockdown, and dp went to a farm shop on his way home from work. DD and I have been taking a walk or run every other day and the roads certainly seem busier. It doesn't help that our local newspaper published and article saying you can travel for a walk etc. Our immediate neighbour is a teacher living by herself and she has had 4 different visitors in the last few days, I'm not spying but we share a drive so we do see it.

SallyWD · 03/04/2020 22:06

I'm going out every day for a walk which is within the rules. Exercise is very important for mental and physical health and the government recognises this which is why it's allowed. I don't feel I'm at risk when walking. I don't touch anything, I don't go near anyone. I don't understand why some people aren't having daily exercise.

museumum · 03/04/2020 22:07

I’ve been out every day either a short bike with ds(6) or a walk or run for myself. We see people but not so many we can’t cross the road to get passed and always in families/couples.

Beamur · 03/04/2020 22:08

I live in a village. As I have a dog (who for reasons of previous abuse) which refuses to go in the garden I do go out several times a day (dog is also elderly and arthritic, do walks are short). Lots of people out and about, all respecting distancing. Can't see any problem with that tbh. We're not having anyone round or going anywhere other than the shops maybe once a week.

nicerainyweather · 03/04/2020 22:09

I drove through our small town yesterday, and saw 2 small groups of people chatting on the high street. There are quite a few walkers about, which is within the rules.

neveradullmoment99 · 03/04/2020 22:12

This REALLY annoys me. This is a serious situation. How do people not understand this! I was talking to my MIL and clearly she thinks the rules dont apply to her. She went out shopping with her partner then went for a jaunt and walk in the country. She is 70 plus ffs.

Mrsbadger77 · 03/04/2020 22:12

Big problem is the older generation ie 70+ I'm speaking about elderly neighbours who I have repeatedly offered to go shopping for and more or less told them to stay at home. They just won't listen and insist on continuing their everyday routines like popping out everyday for a newspaper. I have elderly family members who are the same, as do friends of mine. And in the supermarkets lots of really elderly people and I just wonder how necessary is it for them to be there. Is there really nobody who they could ask. ( I'm sure genuinely there are some who this applies to. )
Not seen too many problems where I live with other age groups.

GatoradeMeBitch · 03/04/2020 22:13

Almost business as usual in my street. The road is quieter, but of course that means more room for bike riding lessons and father/son football games, right? Hmm

Knittingnanny · 03/04/2020 22:18

Sallywd, I don’t understand either, we are allowed to go out every day, it’s good for our mental health as well as physical. It’s not breaking any social distancing if you are able to walk or cycle somewhere that isn’t too busy.
We are both healthy mid 60’s and have a local cycle ride every afternoon and both of my local children are taking their children out everyday for the permitted exercise. We are lucky to have a network of cycle tracks and keep to within a one mile radius from our home.
We are being diligent about social distancing.

Going to work every day, taking dog for a walk every day. Local market one s week for fresh food, supermarket once a fortnight

WaitroseIsMySpiritualHome · 03/04/2020 22:19

Today was definitely busier than i've seen for a while (SW London/Surrey borders). My DC have been home for 2.5 weeks and apart from DD going for a run alone a few times, they haven't left the house. Either I or DH walk the dog once a day and I have to go to the supermarket (but going as little as possible).

I can't believe people are being so stupid and selfish. I am worried about the weekend when it is going to be warm and sunny - I just know that the parks will be full of people picnicking and playing sport thinking that they are ok because it's 'outside in the fresh air'.

NC29 · 03/04/2020 22:20

i went for a drive today mid afternoon. Need a bit of alone time. Not going anywhere particular or not even getting out. Wandsworth and Fulham areas were almost like any normal sunny afternoons. A bit more space between people, but way too many ppl in my opinion.
Every morning this week i walked down to the Thames path (whilst on my morning daily standup through phone and we have a path gate from the estate) and had the idea that I'll stroll along the always empty pathway. I was standing there for 5 minutes to see if I would even have a slot in the constant line of ppl walking 1-2 meters apart and runners running past them. Then I gave up.

cologne4711 · 03/04/2020 22:21

I spoke to some over 70s as part of my job today and half of them were still going out

Over 70s are allowed to be out - it's not useful when the government blurs the guidance.

cologne4711 · 03/04/2020 22:26

I don't know of anyone not following the rules. But I live at the end of a cul de sac so I wouldn't really know.

It was busy this afternoon when I went out though. However, I suspect it was just people going out on a Friday afternoon, nobody works on a Friday at the best of times.

Toilenstripes · 03/04/2020 22:28

My husband and I were apart for the first 3.5 weeks of March. We missed each other terribly but.....that was it. I wanted to jump on a train and go to him. And he me. But we didn’t want to catch the virus or expose anyone else so we didn’t. This isn’t virtue signalling. It’s just really not that difficult to follow the fucking rules.

GabsAlot · 03/04/2020 22:30

I dont think youre meant to walok others dogs right now

alot of dog walkers arent working

lifeisgoodmostofthetime · 03/04/2020 22:31

A large group of teenagers have been hanging around the main road from 8am every morning since last week and creating havoc for locals. They've been breathing in people's faces, being abusive to bus drivers and roaming from area to area all day long. I suspect some of them are supposed to be at school as they have backpacks.

nannieann · 03/04/2020 22:33

I've not been out apart from in my garden since lockdown. Don't fancy running the gauntlet of under-stocked supermarkets and hate queuing. I'm finding plenty of ways of exercising inside the house - youtube exercise videos, yoga. pilates, hula hooping. I don't understand this sudden penchant for merely walking! I'm eking out the food, trying to be resourceful, using the stuff in the backs of my cupboards. I don't want this virus - it's very nasty even if you don't end up in hospital or dead. Thanks to all NHS, carers and other front-line workers. I hope everyone takes all the care they can to avoid contact with others, and thus protect you. Otherwise clapping is just an empty gesture.

Goatymcgoaty · 03/04/2020 22:35

I don’t go out once a day. It’s not that difficult to understand that there might not be time for everyone to do this? Once I’ve fitted in 7.5 hours work plus around 7 hours helping 3 children with their school work, I’m knackered (am basically working two full time jobs). I can’t get up any enthusiasm after all that, to go and walk aimlessly round the housing estate.

Goatymcgoaty · 03/04/2020 22:37

@NC29 are we allowed to go for a drive now? My father said he thinks people are allowed to drive 5 minutes from their house now.

Summersunandoranges · 03/04/2020 22:41

I took my kids out of school a week before lock down so this is my fourth week.

We live rurally and we go out. I go to the shops by myself and get looked at if I get a weekly food shop. It saves me going out to them multiple times.

I take my kids out for walks twice a day sometimes more because we see no one - only cars.

shinynewapple2020 · 03/04/2020 22:43

I'm going out daily to walk dog and occasionally for food. DS and DH are still in work and I know a lot of other people still working too.
