What to buy

I'm hoping the wise collective of Mumsnet can help me out here.
I have a friend who has reached out on fb for numbers for food banks. I have text her with numbers but also offered to buy her some stuff. She is incredibly embarrassed about it, but has conceded that she is short of food for her and her (pregnant) daughter.
The thing is, what should I buy? I'm fine with getting some cereal, pasta, apples, carrots, but is there anything else I should pop in? I'll be looking to spend up to about £20 and she has said she's only short of food, but was too embarrassed to specify exactly what.
What would you put in a food parcel?

Ah - how lovely of you. I would put in things to make simple meals -

Oats
Bananas/ apples
Milk (uht and fresh)
Pasta
Pasta sauce/pesto
Rice
Frozen peas/ carrots
Potatoes
Onions
Canned tomatoes
Canned or fresh soup
Canned beans
Bread
Fruit
Tea/coffee

And then some kind of protein e.g. chickpeas, tuna, mince, tofu (depending on what they eat)

Also just found the trussel trust's guide, which seems to be along the same lines

www.trusselltrust.org/get-help/emergency-food/food-parcel/

"A typical food parcel includes:

Cereal
Soup
Pasta
Rice
Tinned tomatoes/ pasta sauce
Lentils, beans and pulses
Tinned meat
Tinned vegetables
Tea/coffee
Tinned fruit
Biscuits
UHT milk
Fruit juice
Many food banks also provide essential non-food items such as toiletries and hygiene products."

Can’t remember what pregnant women are supposed to need more of but am sure there’ll be a list online, depending on which trimester? (Chocolate, of course!)

Thanks both, that's really helpful. Smile
