What's happening in Italy? Media rant.

The media in general and the BBC specifically are really beginning to grate on me. They are only reporting the negatives in every situation. Since the USA death toll has become high that's all they've focused on. What is happening in Italy now? Has it levelled out? If so, why aren't we hearing about it? Why are the recovery rates (far greater numbers) never mentioned at the same time as new cases and death rates?

People need some positivity. I realise that the situation is dire, believe me, I do, but if we are not given some hope in the situation, morale is going to become incredibly low.

@RedToothBrush - you haven't engaged even slightly with my original post other than to take one sentence out of context. Of course I'm keeping informed with actual news. "Actual news" is what is happening, not just the worst case scenarios. Why are the recovery rates not also being reported?

Because look at the maps
www.ft.com/coronavirus-latest

The worst is yet to come in many countries

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/04/2020 19:59

If you want wall to wall feel good stuff I suggest you get an amazon prime or a netflicks subscription or make sure you set an alarm to watch the One Show daily because you obviously want to escape what's going on and don't want to watch the actual news.

Oh, you missed a bit here, you could have been little bit more patronising if you'd tried harder.

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2020 20:07

  1. They are.
  2. If you are seriously ill then it takes more than several weeks to recover; there aren't that many people who have recovered as yet
  3. There is a certain fear about admitting publicly you've had COVID-19 because you might frighten your community / feel at risk of abuse for being blamed for spreading it
  4. If you've just recovered from a serious illness which put you in hospital, do you want to go on TV saying it was all fine, don't worry about covid-19, say the media are too gloomy or do you want to warn people about how bad it was and how serious it was? Cos I'm sure you are just bursting full of enthusiasm to downplay it. (Plus I also believe that even if you have 'recovered' you still feel run down for weeks afterwards)
  5. It'd be pretty irresponsible of broadcasters to downplay the serious side of this by trivialising it. Especially since initially the media narrative suggested that only the ill and old got seriously ill or died, which led to younger adults ignoring social distancing rules, aiding its spread or worse - getting very ill themselves.

I'm sorry but I don't get your complaint still.

I can try if you like.

Personally the non-story '101 ways to be happy during coronavirus' angle is something I find endlessly tedious and vomit inducing.

The rainbows and virtue signalling about how happy and clappy you are grates with me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Given that news is well the news, if you don't want to watch it because it depresses you, pick up the remote control like I do at 7pm when Alex Jones's perms-grin appears on my TV.

Am I?

news to me, but I'm sure you know better.

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2020 20:41

My point is, that everyone handles things differently.

One mans positive story is anothers grating bullshit every bit as much as the news depressing some people is someone elses informative source of useful information.

But as you were.

TheCanterburyWhales · 03/04/2020 20:51

I don't mind people being positive. It's the weird lying from the deniers that's just, well, strange. There's one poster in particular who is on virtually every Covid thread disputing ANY information that's not "it's just a sniffle" Or she interprets scientific information and puts her own "so that's great isn't it!" slant on it.
She looks very silly, more so because she doesn't seem to get that you can't drop 6 eggs on the floor and then sit dreamily saying what a pretty colour the yolks are without people thinking you're a bit daft. Or Boris himself.

BeetrootBasil · 03/04/2020 20:55

The other things we need are better TV. TV needs to be doing more to keep the nations spirits up.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/04/2020 21:01

Deniers can be annoying, so can be wallowers, there were posters who wanted to bet on the death numbers earlier.

How on earth did we cope before the invention of television?

Seriously our dependancy on the TV isn't terribly healthy.

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/04/2020 07:43

What we need is better internet coverage.

My internet vanishes every weekend when the entire population of North Yorkshire all start using their mobiles (I have a home hub that runs off a mobile signal). It's fine, but I'd like to be able to watch Netflix and Prime!

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 09:43

I am watching less tv now than I was before.
