Wow, Facebook is removing posts on masks

---including posts about how to make masks.

I find this concerning. Masks, even homemade ones, play a role in slowing the spread of this virus, and more and more people are wearing them. At some point there will be a climbdown where this is widely admitted, and then people are going to be annoyed about the fact that they were lied to and censored.

Just find the patterns on you tube. Why have this on FB? Different countries have different views on this.

user1477391263 · 03/04/2020 02:13

I don't need a pattern as I have plenty of masks. My concern is about the clumsy attempts at censorship, especially as it is likely that the official guidance will change as masks become available.

I don’t think Facebook should allow unsubstantiated medical advice. If medical advice does change to recommending the use of masks (how do we get these properly fitted to actually be useful......?) then I still don’t think listening to the “experts” of Facebook is important.

Mimishimi · 03/04/2020 02:20

I was selling a homemade one on Ebay and it had a bid and 55 views. Ebay removed it saying it violated their price gouging policies even though there are hundreds of people doing the same thing. I only did it for a laugh so not too fussed but it was a bit odd. The starting price was $5.00

bulletjournalbilly · 03/04/2020 02:23

Because @Mimishimi this is a laughing matter isn't it?

Let's sell a homemade mask on eBay? Hmm

Mimishimi · 03/04/2020 02:59

No, of course the virus is not a laughing matter. I just wanted to see if i could sell it.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 03/04/2020 03:01

@Mimishimi you wanted to see if you could make some money out of someone panicking don’t you mean? Well done ebay

echt · 03/04/2020 05:51

Maybe they should try this one:

I like this because they do not downplay any other aspect of protecting oneself. No extraordinary claims, just rather a lot better than poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

And it's dirt cheap. I made one today. Five minutes. Bingo.

EricaNernie · 03/04/2020 07:26

i like the look of that sew free face mask

NewYearNewTwatName · 03/04/2020 07:34

Thing is face masks that work are FPP3, because of the size of the particles. FPP2 and 1 to at much lesser extent, but better then nothing.

paper masks and masks made of any old material is like using a mask made of chicken wire in a sand storm.

So people going about thinking they have protection and actually paid for home made masks on ebay, is just wrong as they are useless.
its snake oil.

The use of masks will not reduce the transmission of the virus in the majority of cases. In particular, cloth home made masks when tested show that they have no effect on transmission. By using masks, thepublic will be lulled into a false sense of security. They may have symptoms but believe that if they put a mask on they're keeping the virus to themselves. Or they may believe that they are protected from others who have the virus. Both scenarios are very wrong. This is a very dangerous situation and anyone who thinks making a mask from a bit of cotton folded a few times will protect them is naive beyond belief.
If that were true, don't you think the NHS would be asking all of us to hand make masks and send into hospital for their staff?
Facebook have acted very responsibly to prevent these posts from spreading misinformation.

Davincitoad · 03/04/2020 07:54

Facebook are losing ads for stupid neoprene ones

Davincitoad · 03/04/2020 07:54

Allowing not losing!

Davincitoad · 03/04/2020 07:56

I fully understand that a mask made of cloth etc with not protect you 100%, maybe not even 50% BUT with the amount of potential asymptomatic carriers I think that covering mouth may offer some protection from the spread via this route.

Lumene · 03/04/2020 07:58

I thought cloth masks were better than nothing?

Lumene · 03/04/2020 07:59

Not sure why people are annoyed someone is selling a homemade mask for 5 dollars. Hardly profiteering!

Everytimeref · 03/04/2020 08:01

I wear a home made one, not to stop the virus as it won't work, but to stop me touching my face whilst out.

NewYearNewTwatName · 03/04/2020 08:01

Davincitoad

like a chicken wire mask would give you some protection from a sand storm?

This is what people just aren't getting or understand. The particles are so small they move through material like sand through chicken wire.

loobyloo1234 · 03/04/2020 08:04

Trying to sell a homemade mask for $5.00 @Mimishimi ... FFS. Glad it got pulled

YeOldeTrout · 03/04/2020 08:07

You can find the info about how to make home made masks if you want it, it doesn't NEED to be shared on FBk.

womanthatfelltoearth · 03/04/2020 08:13

I know someone who is supplying NHS workers with handmade masks because they see them as better than nothing

WHO thoughts are changing literally in the past 24 hrs...

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/coronavirus-masks-advice-could-change-after-new-evidence-emerges-11967357

Davincitoad · 03/04/2020 08:16

Yes I understand particle sizes thanks- I was drug developer before I changed career. However there are some studies suggesting doubled folded materials that are tightly woven can help. Also if you are breathing into a material you are less likely to expel as much viral material into the air. Therefore protecting others. Not so much about protecting yourself BUT reducing the amount of aersolised particles.

womanthatfelltoearth · 03/04/2020 08:19

I thought this was interesting too...

Wow, Facebook is removing posts on masks
helpfulperson · 03/04/2020 08:20

It make be that its decided that proper surgical masks help but all these homemade ones do is get damp with your breath and hold any nasties right beside your face. The sand and chicken wire analogy is a good one in terms of particle size.

I anything wearing a face visor would make more sense.

Standstilling · 03/04/2020 08:20

Echt That video makes a lot of sense. Thanks for posting it.
