Pneumonia vacine

This might be a really stupid question but...

If you've had a pneumonia vaccination in the last five years then would that give any protection whatsoever with covid-19 complications?

Interesting idea, but my guess is probably not because this is a new virus and there is as yet no vaccine.

I had a pneumonia vaccine last October at the same time as I had my flu vaccine. I can't remember what type of pneumonia it was for, I just agreed to it when I got to the appointment.

I would like you to be right, but somehow I don't think so.

iVampire · 02/04/2020 16:33

I don’t think so.

The vaccine is against pneumococcal (bacterial) pneumonia and I don’t see why that could have any effect against viral pneumonia

AmelieTaylor · 02/04/2020 16:35

It won’t protect you against CV, but it might help you with secondary illnesses.

maxiflump1 · 02/04/2020 16:36

The existing pneumonia vaccine will protect you from bacterial pneumonia however Covid 19 causes viral pneumonia so will have no effect at all unfortunately.

lubeybooby · 02/04/2020 16:38

No, bacterial vs viral and the vaccine only protects against bacterial

Bobbiepin · 02/04/2020 16:38

No. It's a bacterial vaccine. I had it and then got viral meningitis and viral pneumonia, so no, no protection at all.

I think that's what I meant to ask.

After having to leave the house today after being in for ten days and having to dodge total idiots that still haven't grasped how to social distance properly, my mind has been scrabbling for anyway of hope.

The covid pneumonia is caused by the coronavirus, and isn't a secondary infection. It's part of the primary disease

planningaheadtoday · 02/04/2020 16:51

It will protect you from 22 of the 80 strains of bacteria that cause bacterial pneumonia.

It won't protect you from developing the viral pneumonia that corona virus can cause.

But it might help protect you from secondary pneumonia.

I'm chronic asthmatic and I didn't qualify for the jab because I'm not over 65. I asked specifically twice and was turned down even though I get the flu jab each year and I'm on a pretty serious cocktail of medication for my asthma.

The type that chemists offer is not the same as the one the NHS offer. It's better to have the NHS one.

AnonAdvice · 02/04/2020 16:53

Oh crap so its not the same kind of pneoumonia? Ah just read it will protect against secondary. Thats something at least.

Bobbiepin · 03/04/2020 16:47

@planningaheadtoday you should get it. I would be pushing for it. I got it and my asthma isn't too severe. Fat lot of good it did mind, had pneumonia twice since the jab!
