When will you go out again?

I notice quite a few posts from people saying that they are not in an at-risk group (ie they don't have any medical conditions and they are not in the at-risk age groups) but they are staying indoors and not going out for walks.

If that's what you're doing, at what point will you be happy to go outside again?

I've been going out for a walk or run every day. Hoping to shift the stone I've been wanting to lose for the last year while I'm not working. I don't know how people are coping being cooped up all day. I think it's important for people to still get out as long as they are following guidelines. I don't know many people who are doing that around me though, only people self isolating for the 2 weeks.

I’m going out for a walk most days but my husband, who several medical conditions, just walks round and round and round the garden. I’m beginning to think I should join him and stay safe. I have no idea when, if ever, it will be really safe to go out in the streets , on a bus, to a cafe, again.

I'm in an at risk group and I go out for a walk every day. I see absolutely no one, so makes no difference to anybody. But I still go out about once a week for some sort of shopping because we need food, petrol, whatever and someone has to do it. I've been getting online delivery where available and ordering other food and things online because not everything magically falls from the sky so still have to go out. I wouldn't plan to resume normal shopping or any other sort of normal life before mid June, even if restrictions are lifted though.

I find it somehow psychologically easier not to go out much - as if indoors I don't have to face up to everything being shut down iyswim. So just once a week or so.

We are on day 22 of everyone being housebound apart from one ten minute trip I made to the pharmacy in the village

However, we have a very large garden.

TheDailyCarbuncle · 02/04/2020 14:49

@jenganinja and @HasaDigaEebowai, what would have to happen for you to start going out as normal again?

Probably when I'm no longer pregnant (so July). Then I will be going on walks. But right now I'm having to play with my son in the street as our exercise (cul de sac).

Wannabangbang · 02/04/2020 14:51

Ive passed on some shopping to my mother's doorstep but not going out daily. Can't face the reality of it all, even for excercise, indoor excercise bike and a few runs up and down the stairs will do me.

poppymatilda · 02/04/2020 14:52

I have been out for a walk probably 2-3 times a week, not deliberately, just because I'm struggling with balancing current work, desperately looking for work, managing the household stuff and entertaining a toddler.

I will be out and about everywhere I can be the minute they lift the restrictions.

TheDailyCarbuncle · 02/04/2020 14:53

The question I'm asking is, what would have to happen for people to be happy to go out and about as normal again?

I'm finding to hard to imagine ever feeling safe to go outside again tbh! I think it'll be a long and gradual thing with lots of false starts.

BasinHaircut · 02/04/2020 15:04

I think normal might have changed once the restrictions are lifted.

I also think its different for those who are concerned about catching the virus, and those who are concerned about spreading the virus.

As a healthy household we are less concerned about catching it (relatively speaking) so are still going out for walks, will go to the supermarket without much anxiety, however I am 100% observing the social distancing rules, hand washing etc as I want to reduce the risk that I am adding to the risk of spread.

jenganinja · 02/04/2020 15:05

For me OP it'll probably be when shops and cafes are back open and when there's some reasonable evidence that we should be mingling. The hard question is how will that come about? I can imagine if it's summer and we were allowed to do days out that I would go somewhere nice. A walk round my shut down neighbourhood currently doesn't feel as much worth going out for, I'd rather exercise indoors.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/04/2020 15:22

For me, once we get the the point where we need to go out for food then I will, but that will not be for some considerable time since I am using our brexit stockpile and we have a decent sized vegetable garden and chickens. We can stay here for a good few weeks without going out if we have to. For me to be happy going out again it would be once the restrictions have been lifted and there is good evidence that the NHS is back in control of the situation. I suspect that won't be until June/July though.
