Washing veg/fruit in Milton?

AmIATree · 02/04/2020 13:45

I remember seeing a thread somewhere years ago about washing veg in Milton during the e.coli outbreak. But google isn't telling me anything.

Anyone done this and know if its the same dilution as sterilisation? Also anyone done this and know which fruit/veg/salad its okay for and which you really shouldn't?

No one should be doing this at ALL according to BBC news an hour ago

Wingedharpy · 02/04/2020 13:51

As far as I'm aware, there have been no reported cases of infection by this virus through ingestion ie. no-one has become ill through eating it.

It would, therefore, seem to be a complete waste of time washing your fruit and veg in Milton or any other chemical. A quick rinse under the tap of any unpeeled fruit and veg that you are going to eat raw should suffice.

The time you were spending polishing your fruit and veg, can now be devoted to washing your light switches, door handles, TV remote units, mobile phones and tablets etc etc.😉

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 02/04/2020 13:53

I definitely heard that stomach acids would kill food ingested.

But I do wonder about food being delivered - as if the virus is on the surface, and you handle the fruit/veg, and get it on your hands then can't you transfer it in usual way?

Stuckforthefourthtime · 02/04/2020 13:57

There was a guardian article by a microbiologist who washes her apples in soap and water. Still more than we do, but presumably if you're shielding some fairy liquid might be easy to do (and taste less gross/be less strong than Milton)

Wingedharpy · 02/04/2020 14:07

That's why you are encouraged to wash your hands MustBe.

Virus survives for 3 days max ON SOME SURFACES, if it doesn't find a host.

Unless you like to fondle your veg hourly, no need to wash before storing.

snidgetowl · 02/04/2020 14:32

People actually do this?! Just wash your hands before preparing food, rinse the fruit and veg as you would do normally and wash your hands before eating.

buttermilkwaffles · 02/04/2020 15:39

Thread by a food microbiologist on this (he says don't use soap!)

Please leave the Milton to be bought by those of us who genuinely need it for it's actual purpose of sterilising baby bottles Angry The last thing we need right now is to be seeking medical attention for babies made poorly due to lack of sterilisation.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 02/04/2020 16:16

Madness, you’ve actually gone mad

4forkssake · 02/04/2020 16:18

The part about stomach acid killing the disease is false apparently

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 16:18

@Wingedharpy unless you like to fondle your vegetables hourly 😂😂

Wingedharpy · 02/04/2020 17:24

@Mascotte :🤣🤣🤣
Could become the post CVD19 new chat up line,
"Would you like to fondle my vegetables? I've washed them in Milton".😉

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 17:28

Mmm... sexy.. 😂😂😂

Kaykay066 · 02/04/2020 17:28

Really? I wouldn’t do this. Grapes and applles are packaged in my house just now but are washed prior to eating and bananas have a skin veg is boiled so fine just rinse everything first and wash hands before and after handling as we’ve been told....

AmelieTaylor · 02/04/2020 18:42

@LaurieFairyCake

No one should be doing this at ALL according to BBC news an hour ago*

Based on what?

@wingedharpy you have absolutely NO idea how the thousands of people testing positive & dying contracted it. So it’s ridiculous to say none of them ingested it.

They say cooking at over 60* for more than 4 minutes should kill it off.

But not everyone wants to eat everything cooked and no, a quick rinse under the tap is not going to be enough.

@MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet. Yes it can be transferred like that. It just needs a surface, it doesn’t mind much what that is! It’s happy to be moved from surface to surface until it finds a human host.

@wingedharpy. It’s commonly found at 72 hours on many surfaces, it’s been found much longer as well (longer in cold environments (SARS essentially COVID1 for 2YEARS in the freezer) Even if it was,I don’t tend to leave my vegetables sitting in the fridge 3 days before using any of them.

What has fondling your veg hourly got to do with anything??. If you take a carrot out of the fridge at 48 hours the virus can transfer to your hands.

@snidgetowl

So you put a carrot with the virus on it, on your worktop, you make dinner, touch your face, the pot handles, knives & Christ knows what else...your OH touches the worktop where you put the carrot, now it’s on their hands, they pass something to the baby now it’s on the baby’s hands, baby stuffs fingers into their mouth. You wash your hands - how does that help?

@PowerslidePanda

Milton is not just for sterilising baby bottles it wasn’t even it’s first use! People can buy a bottle steriliser that goes in the microwave or boil bottles. Lots of options.

@AmIATree. Yes I have done that with some of my vegetables. 1cap to 5 litres, soak for 15 mins, then rinse the veg. I put the veg that you can’t really wash properly in it (broccoli etc) but the smooth veg courgettes, carrots, apples etc I wash in soapy water with a good fun and rinse thoroughly. It was a fruit box & had all been handled by many people 🤮. Most of the veg I got today (from Tesco delivery) was bagged at source, so I have just washed the wrappings/bags at this stage. I’ll wash the items as they’re opened/used.

I’m beyond caring what anyone on MN thinks of me tbh. Weeks ago many if us were accused of scaremongering now those same people are panic buying etc.

I really don’t want to get this, so I’m staying in & washing every god damn thing that comes in the house. If others want to have a more cavalier attitude that’s their choice. It’s just a shame they’ll then it’s it on to innocent people who might die. Still, you can’t make some people take a pandemic seriously, apparently

Wingedharpy · 02/04/2020 21:08

Well, you crack on Amelie.
You do whatever you have to, to make yourself and your loved ones, feel safe.
And, I'll do what I feel I need to - based on the shielding guidance, I've been given.

It is possible to drive yourself slowly insane with all this.

If we lose our sense of humour, then we truly are stuffed.

PowerslidePanda · 02/04/2020 21:54

Milton is not just for sterilising baby bottles it wasn’t even it’s first use! People can buy a bottle steriliser that goes in the microwave or boil bottles. Lots of options.

It certainly isn't for sterilising food though! I have twins - I don't have time to boil bottles. And I will buy a microwave steriliser as a last resort if it comes to it, but it's ridiculous that I should have to - when I already have a perfectly good steriliser - just because of selfish idiots mis-using the fluid!

And I say this as somebody else who not only is cleaning everything that comes into the house, but has been self-isolating for 4 weeks already - before even social distancing was brought in, never mind lockdown.

Goingunderground2 · 02/04/2020 22:13

No!
Maybe this is why there's none available for my baby!

Goingunderground2 · 02/04/2020 22:13

No!
Maybe this is why there's none available for my baby!

And it takes 15 mins to work? Confused

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 02/04/2020 22:16

I have a couple of South African friends who have always washed their veg in water with a bit of salt added and then rinsed. Not so sure about fruit though, though I wouldn't have thought it would do any harm.

Pishposhpashy · 02/04/2020 22:30

For some of us who have fought long and hard to overcome OCD the risks of doing things like this are worse than the small risk of contracting covid 19 through not doing them.

Some of you should think about that before you post telling others they are stupid for not doing them. Amelie, for instance.

AmIATree · 05/04/2020 10:17

Thank you @AmelieTaylor

@Pishposhpashy yes, this outbreak is going to set my OCD back and I know that I have to deal with it, but staying alive to get to the point to reintegrate into society again seems a good payoff at the moment.

No I have not been stockpiling Milton and stealing it from babies. We had a left over bottle and decided to put it to good use.

Unpacking the shopping requires a long time and 2 people, so we are avoiding what people are saying about touching it and I’m not going to put something contaminated on my work surface or eat it uncooked.

@buttermilkwaffles Thankyou for the twitter link, but I think that original video is carousel useful and he only talked about putting parcels and cupboard food outside not bloody milk!
