I had hiccups yesterday and again today. Very unusual.

I am actually laughing! I needed this! (No OP, you should be fine as these are not symptomms)

Owlypants · 02/04/2020 14:55

Hiccups are usually a symptom of drinking too much GinWine

FloreanFortescue · 02/04/2020 15:19

My husband had the hiccups for 4 days straight, then on and off for a few days. This has never happened before and is VERY unusual. I found an article about a person in Wuhan who's only symptom was the hiccups and then I found this article that is finding persistant hiccups as a symptom of covid-19. www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0735675720302746

Hello this sounds stupid (most my friends initially thought so) but I had same problem for 4 days in Feb 2020- regular Hiccups for 4 days- Very unusual as I hardly get acidity or Hiccup -I was also wondering if its to do with COVID but GP said no- Sorry this is not the website I visit but was searching correlation of Hiccup and COVID and came across this website and your post so thought I will share by experience

Well, there you have it. Someone phone the WHO and let them know Wink

Carolbaskinstiger · 21/06/2020 10:38

Were you hoping for someone to say yes for the shock (which is supposed to help with hiccups).

WinningEveryDay · 21/06/2020 10:39

I'm surprised the OP was told no..MNetters have been suggesting nearly everything was a sign of CV Smile

FluffyKittensinabasket · 21/06/2020 12:00

You need to self isolate for 14 days now.

Just because there's a Covid19 pandemic doesn't mean that every unusual thing that happens with your body is related to that.

People are still getting colds, hay fever, general sneezing and so on.

I sneeze on a regular basis, it never occurred to me it might be a symptom of Covid.

Is there a reason you would assume hiccups is a symptom of Covid OP?

Ah now, you're all laughing.. but... a Dutch friend of mine who lives in Holland, went skiing at half term to Austria. He brought it back with him. Didn't know it, and wasnt worried about it at the time. In the few days before he got ill, he was laughing on the phone about how he just couldn't get rid of the hiccups, and how annoying it was. At that point we weren't even thinking about COVID as a thing, wasnt mentioned in the conversation at all. He messaged the next day to say he had them again. I mean, it was a big joke!! Then he got ill, went to hospital and had a positive COVID test. His wife caught it from him too.

ohthegoats · 21/06/2020 12:13

I'm not saying that hiccups are COVID, but after that in our house if anyone hiccups we all shout COVID.

@kingis - Don't be too hard on yourself. We don't know everything, but others have looked into this strange connection. It may or may not apply, but just so its not just dismissed off hand I'm offering what I found.

QUOTE: "Abstract
Hiccups (singultus) are reflex inspiratory movements that involve the swallowing reflex arc and can be classified as acute (48 h). A 62-year-old man with no history of malignancy or pulmonary disease presented to the Emergency Department with a four-day history of persistent hiccups.

Other than episodic hiccupping, his physical examination was otherwise unremarkable. An abnormal chest X-ray led to a CT scan of the chest with IV contrast, which demonstrated regional, peripheral groundglass opacities of the upper lobes with small focal groundglass opacities scattered throughout the lungs.

He was tested for COVID-19 per admission protocol, started on hydroxychloroquine, his hiccups improved, and he was discharged to home after 3 days. An emergency medicine physician should keep COVID-19 on the differential and be vigilant of exposure in atypical presentations."
