Have a temperature and swollen/blistered tonsils - do I need to self isolate?

As above really. No thermometer to be found, but I can tell I'm a bit hot, and my tonsils are red raw and covered in white blisters Sad

Is this likely to be CV related or can I safely assume it's tonsillitis? I don't feel well enough to go out anyway but trying to decide if DP can go shopping or if we all need to be isolating for 14 days.

I think you can be as close as possible to positive that it’s tonsillitis

FTMF30 · 01/04/2020 21:03

Tonsils covered in blisters sounds like tonsillitis to me.

SerfNTerf · 01/04/2020 21:04

Thanks. I've never had it before, it's miserable but better than Covid19!

Yep white spots is bacterial tonsilitis. Can you get prescribed some antibiotics?

DoTheNextRightThing · 01/04/2020 21:12

That's tonsillitis. It's so difficult right now though, isn't it? I have a bug too and I keep panicking it's COVID even though the symptoms don’t match. It's like we forget that all the other bugs in the world still exist during this time!

Definitely try to get some antibiotics. Only ever had tonsillitis once and it was miserable, so you have my sympathy.

SerfNTerf · 01/04/2020 21:17

I don't know if I can get prescribed anything, I'll try ringing my GP tomorrow but I'm the only driver in the family and we live rurally (5 miles from a town) so not sure how I'd get them anyway!

Your GP may prescribe some antibiotics based on you telling them about the white spots and drop it into the pharmacy. These are extraordinary times so they may not even need to see you. That is what happened to my DS beg of March.

catsandlavender · 01/04/2020 21:24

I feel for you, it’s definitely tonsillitis. I had it a few years ago and it was a week of HELL, look after yourself! Just settle down and relax however you can and feel comforted by the fact it’s definitely not the virus Flowers

Haggisfish · 01/04/2020 21:25

Yes I agree. Phone Gp and they should be able to send script direct to pharmacist and you get it. You ooor thing. It’s hideous.

itsgettingweird · 01/04/2020 21:27

I'd ring GP. Does sound like tonsillitis. It's maybe possible for you to take a photo and email so they can make a judgement and send a script to nearest chemist for DP to collect.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

SerfNTerf · 01/04/2020 21:27

My mother is freaking me out saying tonsillitis always has a cause which is often a viral infection and that it could still be Covid19 behind it Confused

I'll ring the surgery tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks for the sympathy Flowers

You need to self isolate if you have a temperature. It doesn’t matter if you ‘think’ it’s something else. Phone the doctor get some antibiotics and stay at home.

Get well soon x

Haggisfish · 01/04/2020 21:53

Oh nonsense. Tonsillitis is either viral or bacterial. The bacterial one most often appears with the white patches on your tonsils-these are bacterial colonies. Phone Gp or out of hours or 111 if you can to speak to gp.

usernotfound0000 · 01/04/2020 21:59

Tonsillitis I'd say. DD has it currently, she gets it a bit. I phoned the doctor on Monday morning, no face to face appointment but a doctor rang me back within 30 minutes, prescription for antibiotics delivered to the pharmacy within an hour. The most efficient service I've ever had.

DarkDarkNight · 01/04/2020 22:04

You might not need antibiotics. I get viral to tonsillitis a lot, it’s miserable but goes away on its own.

I had bacterial tonsillitis once a few years ago and it’s the only time I went to the Drs. My temperature was over 40 and it took me ages to recover, I couldn’t get out of bed and was exhausted for weeks after.

I get the white spots with both types.

FTMF30 · 02/04/2020 10:07

Gargling warm salt water might help ease the discomfort whilst you see if you can get antibiotics.

I really feel for you. I got it about two months ago and thought it was a cold at first. It developed into 2 weeks of torture - very painful throat, coughing up lots of phlegm to the point of throwing up (weak gag reflexes), high temperature and a terrible migraine that lasted days. I felt so weak, it was awful. Tonsillitis sounds like such a trivial illness but it certainly doesn't feel like that when you have it.

SerfNTerf · 02/04/2020 11:47

Got a phone appointment with the GP this morning who asked lots of questions and then said in her opinion it's bacterial tonsillitis and has prescribed 7 days worth of antibiotics. She said she doesn't suspect Covid19, phew!

Gargling with warm salt water has helped loads and today I feel better. Well, my ears and throat are still really painful but I'm no longer hot and exhausted and achy.
