How is everyone coping financially?

My husband won’t be furloughed because he started on the 2nd March, we are only entitled to £200 a month from UC, you don’t get any help with your mortgage ( I am going to ask for a mortgage holiday) How is everyone else coping?

Koalsandrabbit

Unfortunately not at our school as there are a lot of children whose parents are key workers so they made the discussion that both parents have to be key workers as they don't have enough staff.

Just listening to Jeremy Vine and all the poor people who can’t pay their bills 😢 one chap called UC and was in a queue of 80,000 people 😲 An expert came on and said the economy could only survive up to 6 to 9 months and then it will be very difficult to turn this around. Companies will go bankrupt, a lot of people won’t have jobs to go back to.

Another who went on payroll on 1 March. I'm waiting to hear from my employer who is paying us in full for now but not optimistic. I read somewhere that you qualify if you signed your contract on or before 28 February so I'm hoping this is the case

Theres a petition re the 1 March date if anyone interested

Oddly we're slightly better off.
Was relatively poor before (I'm a single parent-carer, to one of my kids who has disabilities) was on income support, carers allowance, child got disability living allowance, tax credit disability premium, housing benefit, council tax reduction....previously in a very well paid job (higher rate 40% tax payer) that was impossible to resume due to care needs.
Their pupil premium money will get sent home for lunches, I'm saving on petrol and can prob cancel my car insurance (I've done the renewal for next month so I'll save April's payment only), as it's sat unused on private land, not paying for one kids weekly bus ticket to her secondary school.
Won't be hugely better off, but my shitty situation meant i already lived quite cut back, so I'm oddly fortunate that this has had zero financial impact and no stress.

I know how tough it can be so I'm wishing everyone else strength through this crisis.

I’m still working full time (nhs) and DP is working from home on full pay, we’re not sure how long this will last and when his company can’t carry on he’ll be furloughed.

Hopefully the company will survive, but there’s no guarantees.

We are ok at the moment. DD working from home but expecting to be furlough soon, DDs partner self employed, but her main contribution to the household is keeping the house and garden in good repair and feeding us from her allotmemt. I'm retired on a decent pension, though that may change as the crisis deepens.

My main concerns are my nephews wife who is a nurse and started her first day training in I CU care today and my niece who is on 13 week isolation as she's three months pregnant.

Worrying times for all of us

DH and I run a business, we have furloughed almost all the staff now but we need to keep working doing all the admin / finances etc. We will be ok in the short term so long as the gov scheme to claim back the furlough pay is up and running by the end of April as promised.

We will also be looking into the business loan scheme, if that works we should be OK for a while but if not our savings will be going into the running costs of the business.

Interestingly today one of the few people we are keeping on was complaining because he thought it was very unfair that he had to work for only 20% of his wages (since everyone else got to have 3 weeks off & get paid 80% for doing nothing!), you just can't please some people.

We are also supporting 2 young adult DCs that aren't able currently to work because of the virus (one was just about to start a job & the other has to isolate due to pregnant v high risk partner).

I know we are lucky though, just want to get through this with a business still running and all our staff still in a job.

Me and DH are WFH at full pay, my manager has just been furloughed. Our companies aren't doing well so our jobs could be gone at anytime and our field is highly competitive, I certainly won't able to get back in if I lost my current role.

We still got children to rise, mortgage and bills to pay, it's worrying time but I am aware we are still extremely lucky.

moita · 02/04/2020 20:24

We've applied for mortgage holiday- I'm a SAHM and DH is self employed. Theres nothing going on for him work wise.
