The numbers they are talking about are frightening. I'm just watching the press conference and they're hoping for 100,000-240,000 deaths as a best case scenario if people follow social distancing and they manage to flatten the curve, and 1.5-2.2 million deaths without intervention.

What will happen to the people who don't have healthcare? Or the people on skid row?

It’s not...it started out as a counter culture publication and is owned by a non profit foundation that supports left of center journalism.

As someone mentioned there is a lot of smugness...guess what...we don’t really care if you are smug. Worry about your own situation and we’ll worry about ours.

Well, damn, you said everything I was gonna say only shorter and better. Wink

Speaking from California where our governor and mayors appear to have as much of a handle on it as they can. Can’t say I’ve heard of any undocumented worker round ups or standoffs at the local gun stores, no fights breaking out in the toilet paper aisles that I’ve witnessed either. Our supermarkets apart from a bit of a flurry in week one have remained open with full shelves.

We are concerned however, today’s best case scenario figures aren’t great news but a far better outcome than could be expected should we not stay hunkered down under our stay at home orders for at least another month. Rooting right now for NY and NJ, those guys are dealing with a far worse situation than we are currently and need all the support they can get.

I'ld trust counterculture mother Jones more than the trump fawning msm.

HoldMyLobster · 01/04/2020 03:33

Detroit - we shopped last Tues, then last Sun, both in our local grocery store. The difference was quite amazing. Tues - quite a few shelves almost bare. Sun - pretty much everything in stock.

Walmart today had all the food you'd expect, no sanitizer or wipes but lots of TP.

Also because we're now under a 'stay at home' order they're only letting limited numbers of people in the store at a time, so it's easy to keep your distance from others.

DetroitOnTheMove · 01/04/2020 03:33

The propaganda is getting embarrassing. You aren't even trying!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/04/2020 03:35

Oh yes...Trump has msm swooning at his feet...what planet are you living on...seriously outside of one or two outlets I don’t think I’ve ever seen even a neutral news story about the man.

The thing that worries me the most in the USA is the BMI number and diabetes. These are underlying health conditions that don’t fare well with Coronavirus. Italy’s issue isn’t that they have large elderly population that are in close intergenerational contact.

Bool · 01/04/2020 03:37

*is not isn’t

HoldMyLobster · 01/04/2020 03:42

It has been interesting seeing how the various governors have responded.

Usually the only people that pay any attention to what they do are the residents of their state, but this has really brought them to national attention.

midwesteaster · 01/04/2020 03:51

Our food (Ill) has been up and down, I think it is having a bit of a stretched period again but I've had a Wholefood order delivered this evening, there were a fair few subs but a pretty decent order.
It has definitely been better than family in the UK has experienced.
I've also been waiting in a distanced line outside a store when I went last week.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 01/04/2020 03:56

Has Trump done a good job? Absolutely NOT but like has been previously said States are run by their Governors. There are still some states that have crappy Governors making horrible decisions, and I feel bad for the people living in those states. The biggest problem with that of course is that people can travel between states at will. Which happened when all the Spring Breakers in Florida went home. I live in small state. My Governor took quick action. We have just over 300 cases (or course there are many many more because testing is limited) with only 3 deaths so far. Our grocery stores are stocked. For a little while there was some empty shelves and hard to find items but not now. Yes it's frightening that our death toll could be 200,000 but like previously said remember our population is so much bigger then the UK.

givemeanamepls · 01/04/2020 04:09

@Bool because no one in the UK has high BMI and diabetes, right? UK is some of the fattest in Europe.

givemeanamepls · 01/04/2020 04:11

I'ld trust counterculture mother Jones more than the trump fawning msm.

+1

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 01/04/2020 04:15

Maybe I'm thick but isn't their death rate higher because they have a huge population?

NotMoreFootball · 01/04/2020 04:17

Exactly what @saltinesandcoffeecups said. The US is vast, I'm a 1000 miles from New York, and while the situation there is desperately sad, I'm just sat at home bored. My grocery store is fully stocked with no queues, the weather is nice so I can hike in my neighborhood and the medical staff in the local hospital have been furloughed as elective surgery has been cancelled but we only have about 10 hospitalized cases of covid 19.
Americans are not stupid, they did not buy extra ammo to 'shoot the virus' as stated further up the thread. We all saw the post-apocalyptic predictions by some media so I assume they were worried about looting and possible unrest from long quarantines.
The President is not controlling how the individual States respond, most Governors are doing the very best they can and there is no point in pitting one countries response against another.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 01/04/2020 04:52

@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie you are not thick, that is why. I've just looked at the current rates for death and USA is 12 for every 1 Million. The UK is 26 for every Million, over twice as many as the USA

FromEden · 01/04/2020 04:53

Yes, after the initial panic buying, shops are pretty much back to normal in my city. Plenty of fruit and veg, meat, dairy etc. Can order groceries on amazon and have them delivered the next day. Usually its same day but obviously there is extra demand. I'm seeing on here it's taking weeks to get delivery slots in the UK.

The governor here shut down non essential businesses and schools weeks ago and the number of cases in my state are currently manageable with infections predicted to peak in 2 weeks. That main cause for concern is the unemployment situation but overall, it's not the shitshow people seem to be wishing for at all.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 01/04/2020 05:08

@FromEden the unemployment is high, but the government is giving $600 a week ON TOP OF the normal unemployment benefits people will get. And they are made available to anyone who is out of work because of Covid19

Bellagio40 · 01/04/2020 05:25

Connecticut here. Our schools closed three weeks ago while Boris Johnson was telling you to wash your hands, sing happy birthday and everything will be fine.

Our restaurants and bars closed more than two weeks ago, closely followed by hair and nail salons. Yesterday our town parks and playing fields were all closed.

All the supermarkets have been receiving their usual deliveries and we have plenty of everything to choose from. They are only allowing limited amounts of shoppers in at a time and so we queue 6ft apart outside. Some supermarkets have a one way system with arrows painted on the floor. Some won’t allow you to bring your bags from home.

We are not going to be “decimated” as a PP so nicely put it. What an odd thread this is.

YgritteSnow · 01/04/2020 05:32

From the start I have looked at the U.S and thought "it could be worse, we could be them, where desperate and terrified people will have total unregulated access to guns..."

MarginalGain · 01/04/2020 06:03

We are not going to be “decimated” as a PP so nicely put it. What an odd thread this is.

Indeed. Lots of catastrophising and the usual anti-US rhetoric.

Trump's response has been far from perfect, but his greatest crime is that he's said that the medicine can't be worse than the disease. People like to hear lots of senseless yammering about how we'll lock people down as long as it takes to 'save lives' with no worry the economy.

JudyCoolibar · 01/04/2020 09:14

Our death number is currently at 3860. The UK is at 1789 but we have 5 times the population.

I think what is concerning people is the way the figures are rising so quickly; on 26th March you had 82K cases, less than China, today you have 188K. Where we had 3K new cases yesterday (our highest ever), you had 24K - i.e. 8 times as many.

Yes, those without insurance and the homeless will be treated if they become ill. It’s illegal for a medical facility not to treat someone who needs urgent care

The problem is those who, in the early stages, don't need urgent care but who don't seek medical care because they don't have insurance; and those who carry on working when they shouldn't because they can't afford to pay for medical care.

It's great that some governors have a handle on things and are limiting the spread of C19, but it doesn't change some of the more worrying aspects of the situation.

ADreamOfGood · 01/04/2020 10:52

The death rates in all countries are nonsense at the moment, because not enough people are being tested anywhere. After the crisis, when there has been mass testing of antibody presence, then proper death rates can be calculated.

Not that that's my main concern in any case. I don't want anyone to die from this obviously.

HarrietThePi · 01/04/2020 11:02

@FromEden the unemployment is high, but the government is giving $600 a week ON TOP OF the normal unemployment benefits people will get. And they are made available to anyone who is out of work because of Covid19

That's a relief. A good friend of mine is from the US, still living there. She was sacked recently because of Coronavirus. I hope she claims unemployment benefits if she can't find a job. I know she wouldn't want to do it, but I really hope that she will. I know she's hoping to find a new job but I imagine it being similar to the UK at the moment with very little places hiring. She's a really good friend, she lives alone and she has diabetes and suffers from depression. I've been really worried about her.

heathspeedwell · 01/04/2020 11:06

Excess weight is a significant risk factor for this virus; studies have shown that over 70% of patients who have died so far were overweight, obese or clinically obese on the body mass index scale.

The US has an obesity rate of 36.2%, while the UK has a rate of 27.8%, which is a significant difference.

Neither of us are great compared to Japan with a 4% obesity rate. This may well be a factor in why Japan's death rate is so low.
