Why would my line manager protect me from furlough?

I get the impression I'm missing something.

My job is very community based, there's very little I can do in the office, let alone from home. I've done the sums and I can afford furlough, once work costs like commuting etc are taken off, provided I have a job to go back to.

I mentioned this to my line manager, however he said he was doing everything he could to protect me from furlough, others have been furloughed and my role has been brought up, but he persuaded them that it was essential I stay working from home.

I can't understand his reasoning - if I go on furlough it would protect the jobs of other people by it being funded by the government.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious?

Not really sure, some managers don’t seem to understand it. Maybe it’s so you don’t lose 20%?

If the government money runs out before business is fully back up to speed, are those on furlough more likely to be made redundant?

Do you have enough to do at home?

I imagine if they have to cut staff at the end of all this then those who ‘manned the fort’ may be safer than those who have already been furloughed for months in end.

Maybe it’s to protect your job altogether?

Perhaps he sees a risk that if you don’t work for a while the company may not see you as essential further down the line ?
Hard to say without knowing what your role is ..
Anyway good position to be in -getting a full wage !

Maybe because.... I should probably know this... If you are furloughed does it affect your pension... Does it just get frozen? Just curious if that is what your employer is protecting on your behalf?

This was what I thought too.

I did wonder if "full" redundancy was in the air and that's why, as furlough is kind of half way there?

I can probably do 20% of my job from home. I'm helping out other people with their tasks to fill out my time.

It's because when cut backs come in the future those that have been furloughed are more likely to be made redundant. Those that were deemed more essential doing their job, whether working from home or not are those that will be staying on first. There are many, many people who do not want to be furloughed for this very reason.
