Key workers on the 'vulnerable'(not very vulnerable) list - how are you balancing work with your safety?

For those who have underlying health conditions which require them to practise stringent social distancing - how are you managing to do this if you are in a job with lots of human contact e.g. shop assistant or teacher?

Are your employers supporting you to WFH or is there pressure to come in?

Doing my job as normal - even more close contact than before ironically due to room isolation of residents. - care home. Ppe useless as residents can’t hear you or lip read when you wear a mask.

My job isn’t able to be done WFH. I’ve been taken off direct patient care, but am now in an office which is busy and completely unable to maintain social distancing.

Thanks for your responses. I’m going to be in this position in a short time and I’m quite concerned how I’m meant to manage it!

My personal opinion is that you go through a whole host of emotions before finally reaching the ‘oh fuck it’ stage of just accepting that it could either end well or end badly - but at least you did your best and your affairs are in order. (This is now me)
You will also develop a very dark sense of humour, if you don’t the situation will drag you under.
Hindsight will be a wonderful thing.
As for managing it - I don’t think you can - you just deal with it as it happens.

My OH has two conditions that put him in the vulnerable category. He's expected at work in a busy call centre like normal. All I can read is how employers must take action to allow for social distancing especially for those in a vulnerable group. But what are your rights if they don't? It's very distressing

Sunshine1239 · 31/03/2020 23:20

I’m our place all over 70s and vulnerable were sent home for 12 weeks in full pay

Sunshine1239 · 31/03/2020 23:21

They have to allow you to isolate as it’s government advice but I guess they don’t have to pay you

My DH can’t work from home (emergency services) but we have 3 disabled children (one of whom is in the “extremely vulnerable” group). He’s been advised to change clothes and shower once home and to practice social distancing. Not sure how that works in his job but there you go!! I’m so scared that he’ll bring the virus back into our home. It’s really frightening.

A close relative of mine is a pharmacist and in the vulnerable group. They are continuing as normal. They don't have any other option really.

MeadowHay · 31/03/2020 23:34

Loads of HCPs (and social care workers too tbf) are in the vulnerable group. The NHS wouldn't cope if they all packed in work to protect themselves. The correct PPE is absolutely vital otherwise lots of them will die and the blood will be on the hands of the state.

Thank you, seems like there are quite a few of us in this situation then.
