Does anyone think that grocery prices have gone up?

I know we are in uncertain times, but the supermarkets must be raking it in!

My weekly shop has gone up so much!

Totally agree. I know they aren't doing deals but it just feels like they're ripping the sh*t out us.

AliBear90 · 31/03/2020 17:50

Yes mine was 1.5 times it’s usually price!

LochJessMonster · 31/03/2020 17:51

I noticed my normal weekly shop was more expensive than normal!

Babyroobs · 31/03/2020 17:51

Yes there certainly doesn't seem to be many special offers. I bought a loaf of multi-seed bread from the coop bakery just now as it was reduced but the normal price was £1.90 and it was tiny and nothing special really. I'm sure they aren't normally that price !

tulippa · 31/03/2020 17:52

I'm spending more as I'm having to buy more full price branded items I wouldn't normally go anywhere near. I haven't noticed actual prices going up.

MrsMalcolm · 31/03/2020 17:52

Mine has too. Disgusting to put prices up when it is hard for so many

lentenwonder · 31/03/2020 17:52

Abandoning the multi buy discounts alone will be making them more money, I always buy most of my non perishable stuff based on what’s on offer.

JoeySpecial · 31/03/2020 17:52

It's so annoying because they must be making so much money!!!

I have an online slot booked and hardly any own. brands are available either, they are all branded items!

I am so fortunate to have a regular wage coming in still. Some people must really be struggling with the increase in prices.

Christ yes.
About 3/4 weeks ago went to Asda. Gastro chips were about £1-80
Went today they were £2-99

lentenwonder · 31/03/2020 17:53

Abandoning multi buy discounts is huge because surely most people buy based on those?

Bumfuzzled · 31/03/2020 17:56

Yes!!! Our usual weekly shop costs about £100, give or take £20. This week it was £150 and it wasn’t a particularly luxurious shop. We thought we’d cut it down to the essentials for the week, no extras or joints of meat. We weren’t expecting it to be so much. It’s making the local farm shop and butcher deliveries look far more competitive.

Gronky · 31/03/2020 17:57

It makes sense that they would remove multi buy deals since there's no additional impetus needed to sell goods before they go out of date.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2020 17:58

It's so annoying because they must be making so much money!!!

I'm not sure whether that will be the case... they're probably selling a lot less 'non essentials' which are likely to have higher markup, and they're dealing with additional logistical issues.

They ought to be keeping the price of basic necessities low though.

JoeySpecial · 31/03/2020 17:58

Asda are still doing multi buys.

I only tend to use the ones that I order every week anyway and they are still on.

I think it’s an absolute disgrace. The excuse of deterring bulk buying for stopping deals and discounts is bullshit seeing as they are limiting items per person.

I noticed an item DD likes has gone up from £1.75 to £2.70!

Sales for all supermarkets for March were 20% up - £10.2 billion. I bet their shareholders won’t be worried about a taking a financial hit like everyone else Hmm.

DH works for a supermarket (logistics) and there are rumours staff will be a bonus of 10% of weekly pay when this is over - £70 for him.

ComtesseDeSpair · 31/03/2020 17:59

I haven’t noticed individual prices of goods increasing, just no special offers or BOGOF - basically, there’s currently no need to encourage people to buy more than they need, so they’ll stop trying to use financial incentives to tempt it. Just how the market works.

But I’ve also noticed lots of smaller independent grocery shops with signs up saying they haven’t changed their prices and don’t intend to, which is a decent gesture when they could, especially since margins are often tight for small businesses.

buttherulesdontapplytome · 31/03/2020 17:59

Yes! Huge increase and much less choice.

irregularegular · 31/03/2020 18:02

Yes definitely my shopping is costing more. Combination of having to replace with more expensive substitutes and no special offers. Don't know about base prices being higher as I don't really track them that carefully. But supply is down. Demand is higher. Their costs of sourcing will have gone up. Plus costs of staff overtime etc. Of course prices are going to go up.

Gronky · 31/03/2020 18:05

DH works for a supermarket (logistics) and there are rumours staff will be a bonus of 10% of weekly pay when this is over

Considering what they're having to put up with at the moment, that seems more than fair.

BrooHaHa · 31/03/2020 18:07

Makes sense. Supply and demand and all that.

ssd · 31/03/2020 18:13

I'd like to see if this increased prices made way for increased staff wages. Seems only fair.

AgeLikeWine · 31/03/2020 18:13

I haven’t noticed specific price rises, but I definitely have noticed far fewer offers, promotions, multi buys etc.

There is also much less choice available, so for example, people who would normally buy own-brands which are now unavailable are now forced to buy much more expensive branded products. I bought expensive Kleenex tissues & Fairy washing up liquid last weak, when I would normally buy the cheapest ‘basics’ own brand.

Hormonecrazyhell · 31/03/2020 18:20

Yep mines gone up :( can’t get to Aldi so it’s all tesco/ASDA all their own brands are out of stock, so 45p for 1k of rice at Aldi, then £1.50 tesco own, now £2.49 for a brand and only 500g, same with bread, milk eggs meat :(

Gronky · 31/03/2020 18:44

now £2.49 for a brand and only 500g

Depending on what rice you enjoy, try the Asian supermarkets, you can get premium rice for that price and a middling one for less. The no-wash Japanese brand I'm partial to is £9 for 2.5kg and that's absolutely delicious.

JoeySpecial · 31/03/2020 18:45

It all adds up, doesn't it?
5p here and there...
