I’m doing shopping for a number of self isolating people who give me cash with their shopping lists.
I have very little funds in my bank account.
I’ve just been to Waitrose & I was told they aren’t allowed to take cash anymore?
There are no signs in the store.
It was the same in the co op.
I paid with my card but I was unable to buy one shop because I didn’t have enough money.
Some of the people I been shopping for are very elderly & don’t want to do on-line banking.
I’m just wondering if this now a rule in place ?

Oh that is hard. Could you pay the cash in first to your account at an ATM the day before you go shopping?
Perhaps the self-service machines are still accepting cash? I'm sure a staff member would help if you don't like using them (I don't).
I'm hoping that someone at supermarkets will be able to give a solution.

Lidl Still taking cash. Or they were yesterday. Infact our local co op were accepting cash yesterday. The cashier said they were encouraging people to use card but lots of elderly round here who insist on cash. Could you just pay the cash into your account. I'm not sure if bank accepting cash but maybe worth checking.

Could the people you are shopping for transfer funds into your bank account online?
If each put in £50 you could keep a tally of how much each shop has cost and deduct from their "kitty", then they can transfer more when their kitty is down to £10 or so.

By the way - how are they getting hold of cash? Are they going out to ATM or bank to withdraw? If they are, why are you doing their shopping??

I’ll try to think of solutions .
Obviously I’m trying to reduce car journeys. One family who I’m shopping for live 10 miles away (remote location) so it will be a 30 mile trip in 2 days & then obviously the bank/shops etc.
I’ll have a word with them & try to persuade them to transfer into my bank account.
I absolutely understand the need for retail workers to protect themselves but I was just taken back as there were no signs explicitly stating ‘no cash payments ‘
Thanks all

BMW6 - most elderly I know keep cash in their homes.
One family who have been in self isolation withdrew cash a couple of weeks ago before they self isolated. They have not left the house (expect for walks/exercise) in 2 weeks. He is very high risk so I’m anticipating they’ll be SI for the next 10 weeks as well

Hmm, could they give you a cheque to pay an amount into your account? As they are in isolation they would likely not be passing CV to you. They could push it out of their letterbox.
