High-risk baby - hospital trying to cancel scan

So 2020 was already turning out to be pretty shit for me even before all of this kicked off.

After trying to conceive for 16 months, my husband and I were delighted to find out I was pregnant in November. Pregnancy appeared to be going well, and we told family and friends after the 12 week scan.

At the 20 week scan in February, we were devestated to be told that the baby had a number of congenital heart defects, some of which if they get worse could lead to a very serious heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. We had a further anamoly scan at around 21 weeks where they said they couldn't find anything else wrong with the baby. We are now having further specialist heart scans at John Radcliffe to check the development of the heart. But we were also told we would have more regular general scans, the next one would be taking place at our local hospital on 2nd April.

I text my midwife on Sunday to check to see if my husband would be allowed into the scan. She said no, which I was coming to terms with. But then I had a call yesterday from the hospital midwife to say the specialist scanner was trying to cancel the scan altogether.

I understand the risks of coronavirus and the pressure the hospital must be under. However I am really worried that something else might be going wrong with the baby and I wont know about it. Our next scan at john radcliffe is on 17th April but that is only looking at the heart and not the rest of the baby. I dont know whether other organs are almost fully developed at 20 weeks and therefore if they were ok at 20 weeks, they will be ok now?

Any advice or reassurance welcomed!

Congratulations!
Most people don’t have a scan after 20 weeks until 36 weeks I think, so if there was nothing else of concern, then I don’t think there would be now. It would be worth asking the midwife why they wanted the extra scans tho, maybe they were for a specific reason that would put your mind at rest, that they aren’t crucial at this stage - maybe more for growth/fluid and therefore could wait?

Congratulations OP.

My daughter had congenital defects confirmed at our 20 week scan. We had 2-3 scans afterwards, but these were specialist scans just looking at the defect (her face), after the 20 week scan we didn't have another general scan as the 20 week one had already ruled out issues with other areas.

I hope this puts your mind at rest.

Thanks guys, that is reassuring. I am going to try and speak to the midwife at the specialist hospital to see if they can confirm they dont need to see the rest of the baby, or if they do, whether they can do it when I go in for the next heart scan. Fingers crossed that doesnt get cancelled, that has to be classified as essential, surely?!

No problem OP. I would think the heart scan is essential. Also, they may be able to do a basic general scan at the same time for reassurance, seeing as you are there anyway.

Wishing you the best, this is difficult to cope with at the best of times, without this extra worry on top.
