What do you mean when you day a household is self isolating?

I seem to have seen a lot of posts where households are "self isolating" and therefore feel they are "safe" after 14 days. Does this mean you've had no contact at all with the outside world? No shopping, no exercise, no post or deliveries? How?

Social distancing (which is what has been asked of most of us) is something else. It's not intended to elliminate all risk of infection, for most indviduals the risk from catching the virus is low. Social distancing reduces the rate of spread to protect the NHS. That is all, it doesn't give individuals any guarantee of protection and it's not designed to.

No contact with anyone at all. No shopping, no essential pharmacy trips. Etc. I would say post and deliveries were allowed though.

Tbh I say but about this house but what I actually mean is we are following the gov guidelines and not going out except for our daily walk or weekly trip to the supermarket. Neither of us have any symptoms and understand we will likely catch this at some point. It is about stretching out the time when people get it as opposed to stopping it completely.

Most people are self isolating because they (or someone in their household) has a cough or fever, or if they’re in a higher risk group. I don’t think it’s a significant number doing it to feel safe. As soon as they go out, they could immediately catch the virus.

mynameiscalypso · 31/03/2020 08:35

Those people I know who have been self isolating have been doing exactly that - no contact with the outside world for 14 days. People have dropped off food for them outside their front door any any exercise has been taken in their gardens. Most people I know who have been self isolating have not been doing it to avoid catching it but to potentially avoid spreading it.

@Igotthemheavyboobs - what you're doing, as are 90%+ of the UK who are not key workers, is social distancing. Self isolators are not going to the supermarket, they are getting neighbours/friends dropping food off to them.

Not leaving the house at all, even for shopping or exercise.

Leaving deliveries or post for several days before touching them.

middleager · 31/03/2020 08:43

We have done this - 14 days tomorrow. My teen son had a high temperature for 2 days (39 degrees). He's fine and touch wood, so are the other 3 of us.

We haven't been out.
We already had some food in as I've been following the prepper CV threads since January.
But I'd also got a Tesco delivery and told them we were SI. They left bags on doorstep.

It's really quite simple to follow if you have food.

I'm shielding. No shopping, no walks, no contact with anyone
Have been since the 17th March

Potentialmadcatlady · 31/03/2020 08:51

14th March here. No exercise outside of garden. No contact, no shopping etc. Deliveries are kept to a bare min and are treated as if they are covered in glitter and no glitter is allowed in house.

Self isolating due to DD being ill. No going out shopping or out in the car. All shopping delivered. Have been walking in the countryside. We live rurally. Can go out and about in two days time, but really where can you go anyway? I think mentally it will just feel better that you CAN go out if we need to.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 31/03/2020 09:55

Self isolating due to DD being ill

Same

Left the house on Friday to get shopping, came home to find she was ill and haven’t left the house since

We were already doing our exercise in the back garden and house so no change there...we were thinking of going for a walk this week, but THATS not happening

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/03/2020 10:03

We are just coming to the end of a fortnight's isolation as DH and I have both had symptoms. We have not left the house other than to go into our garden in that time. We've not seen anyone other than my mum - through our front window, she stayed outside for a chat!

We have deliveries but they've been left on our doorstep, and we've had no contact with the drivers.

Lisette1940 · 31/03/2020 10:13

Isolating since 21 March due to persistent cough in our 10 year old. Think it was asthma attack now. Neighbours left milk and bread at door. We haven't budged from the house.
