Where is the extra hospital capacity for the north east?

Kitchendoctor · 30/03/2020 19:35

Additional capacity is being created in London, Birmingham and Manchester, yet Newcastle Upon Tyne has quite a high number of cases competed to other, much bigger, cities (144, higher than Manchester, Bristol, Leeds, even some areas of London).
Plus other areas close by aren’t far behind, yet I haven’t seen anything about plans to ramp up our bed capacity.
Why is this??

Yes, I'm aware of that. My point being is that hospitals are being constructed north of Birmingham. I would imagine there are people far more qualified than you or I who are involved in the strategy for where, and in what order, they are built.

QuimJongUn · 30/03/2020 20:31

Newcastle is sending a lot of its cv patients to Cramlington.

A field hospital near Leeds would be pretty useless to us here I would have thought?

The point (I've perhaps badly) tried to make is that more hospitals are being built in the north. I'm not suggesting they'll ship everyone down (it's in Harrogate, I might as well just say it) but that they are being built, and quickly.

FatimaLovesBread · 30/03/2020 20:34

Surely the PP is not saying the hospital north of Leeds is for Newcastle but patients. But that if 3 hospitals have been announced, and this leeds hospital is being built but has not yet been announced, then it is likely there are others been built in other locations. We just dont know yet.

And North of Leeds would probably be more like 1.5hours to Newcastle

FatimaLovesBread · 30/03/2020 20:36

I think I know the location @B1rdinthebush

user1471468296 · 30/03/2020 20:37

Re the areas surrounding Newcastle, Borders patients would go to Borders General, or Edinburgh, not a Newcastle hospital.

B1rdinthebush · 30/03/2020 20:38

@FatimaLovesBread That's exactly what I'm saying. And yes, it's 1.5 hours away. I mentioned in my last post that it's Harrogate (it'll be announced soon anyway).

RandomlyChosenName · 30/03/2020 20:39

There’s 498 cases in Hampshire. Hampshire has no extra hospital. It is the second worst affected area in the country.

CherryPavlova · 30/03/2020 20:43

A hospital is planned for Portsmouth, Heathrow area and one near Ashford. More are planned in the North.

dementedma · 30/03/2020 20:46

Pray that you don’ t need one, rather than complain you haven’t got one. they are part holding pens for the dying, part morgues. Be careful what you wish for

Rosegoldglass · 30/03/2020 20:48

Not a surprise if we are over looked, I hope that they are actually looking into planning a nightingale within the region.

jomaIone · 30/03/2020 20:59

FFS just because it's not being announced doesn't mean you're just going to be left to expire...

We are in the north of Scotland and I know of 3 wards that have been cleared and a very large field hospital being organised in Glasgow.

Even if the large field hospitals aren't exactly near you, they will use helicopters and planes to get you there. Our army base here has just acquired 3 helicopters from down south to help transfer people from remote areas.

LuluJakey1 · 30/03/2020 20:59

Newcastle to Leeds is about 110 miles depending on where exactly. It is 2hours at least and usually more - my PIL lived outside Leeds in West Bradford and it took us 2.5 hrs.

B1rdinthebush · 30/03/2020 21:03

@LuluJakey1 It's in Harrogate. About 1.5 hours from Newcastle. But, as I've mentioned, I'm not suggesting it will serve people in Newcastle, just that hospitals are being built in the north. This one hasn't even been announced so that suggests there will be others in the pipeline.

fluffdeloop · 30/03/2020 21:05

it's a lot quicker on the now pretty empty roads via ambulance

CountFosco · 30/03/2020 21:12

We are in the north of Scotland and I know of 3 wards that have been cleared and a very large field hospital being organised in Glasgow.

And as I'm sure you aware a hospital in Glasgow is at least one flight from Orkney or Shetland. And Shetland has quite a few cases of Covid19 for the population.

TeeniefaeTroon · 30/03/2020 21:36

I'm in the north east of Scotland and it's 4 hours drive to Glasgow, even if they set something up in Aberdeen that's still almost 2 hours away. Never mind the poor buggers even further north of me.

StealthPolarBear · 30/03/2020 21:40

Justyou I came on to mention cobra too :) maybe they're bringing us a giant portacabin on the back of a lorry. It's currently stuck somewhere on the m1.

shampoofarrow · 30/03/2020 21:43

@ChipotleBlessing you mentioned modelling up thread, has this been published showing which areas are expected to be heavily hit and when? I'd be interested

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/03/2020 21:44

Newcastle has a lot of existing hospitals in the general area. I've no idea if it's more per head than other cities but it feels like a lot.

I wonder if they will strip out soft plays? Lots closed and are in massive warehouse type buildings.

BunsyGirl · 30/03/2020 21:44

The London one was built first because that’s where the most cases are. No surprise given the large and transient population living in close proximity to each other. Don’t make this a North South divide thing. There are lots of people living in poverty in London and other areas of the South East.

Looneytune253 · 30/03/2020 21:47

There's a large local derelict care home that is currently being fitted out in north Tyneside. Not sure exactly what they're doing with it but it's a decent size

30not13 · 30/03/2020 21:48

I'm expecting the new p&j in Aberdeen to be one. Right next to airport. Cant think of anywhere near Inverness suitable other than new uni?
(Hi to the mners on here who are clearly nearby!)

Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams · 30/03/2020 21:52

Of all the things to worry about, this isn't one of them. This is an aspect that can be and is being carefully planned.
