Worried about racism due to coronavirus

I am a Singaporean living in the UK with a british husband and am pretty settled (mortgage, job etc). Honestly, coronavirus scares me, not just the virus but mainly because of the racist attacks against people of east asian appearance and the economic fallout (which would probably make the public blame Chinese people even more). I am lucky in the sense that both hubby and I work from home, we are able to pay our mortgage and we have a full pantry. No baby yet but after this covid 19 experience, I am definitely not having more than 1 child because i feel scared about being able to protect 1 child, let alone 2. There have been reports of an entire Asian american family being stabbed in a restaurant in the USA because the perp thought that they had coronavirus and the youngest child was only 2 :( Also, as this is the first big recession I encountered in my working life (I was in secondary school during the 2008 recession); I am reminded even more strongly about how important it is to have a savings fund; so many people have lost their jobs(and that number would only increase) and given the shortages in the supermarket for basic goods, I am not entirely sure how people on a shoestring budget cope. The only reason I have a well stocked fridge is because I am more liberal with my food spending, which isn't an option if you have a bigger family or are on a tight budget. Basically, I feel like the carpet has been pulled under my feet, and I have so many worries. Not just covid, but also for my safety (I feel scared when I go out because there are some men who look at me in quite an aggressive way, so I don't go out even for exercise) and future financial security (thankfully I live in a very nice London suburb). Anyone else having the same fears?

Utterly admittedly I need to work on my delivery and not go straight for insults but normally use "shut up dickhead" ... I'm working on it!

I also like to mention BSE .

Allyfromtheblock · 31/03/2020 00:48

I have encountered quite a bit of racism and I felt lost and scared and did not know how to explain to my child. A month ago when we were waiting for a school bus, it started raining so we quickly run under a bus stop, a business looking man started staring aggressively at us. It was so unexpected and scary, because it was Central London, and just me with a small child.. I know how you feel OP. It’s so shocking when you face it in seemingly modern society in the UK. I feel lost to describe what racism is to my child because you can face it on so many levels and it is just so not fair.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 31/03/2020 00:49

Haha Daily I also tend to find an insult before anything else! Grin “Are you racist or just dumb?” is ds1’s favorite!

Allyfromtheblock · 31/03/2020 00:49

Forgot to mention that we have somewhat East Asian look but we have nothing to do with East Asia and have never even been to mainland China, have never seen a bat, and my lovely child has nothing to do with bats or viruses

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 31/03/2020 00:55

Ally I’m so sorry that people are dicks. I hope the good outnumber the bad. I think - I hope! - that lots of people will understand how hard it is, and be extra protective of you and stand up to the racists Flowers

Battysace123 · 31/03/2020 12:19

By the way I have mixed heritage, I am half Asian. There is no justification whatsoever to why I gave the Chinese man dirty looks. The crazy thing is the only beauty channel on utube I watch is style Suzi who is Chinese.

Chiyo666 · 31/03/2020 12:31

Yeah sure you are.

Allyfromtheblock · 31/03/2020 16:40

Thank for the support Utterly. Racism is the ugliest and dumbest thing out there.

AutumnRose1 · 31/03/2020 16:43

Batty so you don’t know why you did it?

ArriettyJones · 31/03/2020 16:52

I’m from London and I can’t imagine you facing racist attacks linked to COVID there. London is very multicultural and cosmopolitan and those aren’t the kind of attitudes that prevail there.

Have you been in London long?

AutumnRose1 · 31/03/2020 16:55

Arriety

I’ve been a Londoner all my life, of course I experience racism!

Clavinova · 31/03/2020 17:07

I'm giving everyone dirty looks if they come too close - Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock and Chris Whitty (self isolating) are as pale as they come and they've got it. The only thing that worries me about people of Asian appearance is if they are wearing masks to the supermarket - I can't help thinking, 'Should you be out?' Although they are probably wearing the masks for their own protection - it is a bit disconcerting.

Hannah021 · 31/03/2020 17:08

Im sorry you feel that way. Before the lockdown i saw a Chinese lady being targeted in Aldi, the store lady at the till stood up and kicked the racist lady out saying "get out, none of us here will serve. You need to make your way out now"... The security guard pulled her out...

So while racism exists, the overwhelming majority do not condone such behaviour.

Desiringonlychild · 31/03/2020 17:27

@Clavinova given that covid is spread through droplets from your nose and mouth, it does make sense to wear a mask. It doesn't make sense to me that medical staff have to wear it but they say it doesn't benefit ordinary people to wear it. In fact Austria and the German city of Jena is looking to make it compulsory. In Hong Kong, Taiwan, people look at you like you have a third arm if you don't wear it- they had a bad time with SARS and the practice is very ingrained. My hubby and I both wear masks and I also wear little gloves. It's better to be careful.

@Chiyo666 I've been honest about everything else so why would I lie about watching style Suzi. I've been watching her videos for around 7 years.

ArriettyJones · 31/03/2020 22:05

I’ve been a Londoner all my life, of course I experience racism!

Yes, of course. I worded that completely wrongly.

I just can’t see London being a place where it becomes normal to hold certain ethnicities responsible for COVID or express that.

Allyfromtheblock · 31/03/2020 23:27

That’s exactly why it was so unexpected and shocking to see so much racism in London. There was little racism in London in the past. But now it is as if some people stare at you and your child and blame of Covid.

ArriettyJones · 31/03/2020 23:38

That’s awful. I would never have imagined it. It is though half the country have gone mad in one way or another.

Horrible that people turn jealous, angry, judgmental and bigoted so quickly in a crisis Sad

xsquared · 12/04/2020 17:36

I definitely have experienced more racist behaviour against me since Covid started.

At first it was just teenage lads being stupid and laughing about Corona, on my way to work but today a grown man muttered "fucking Chinese" under his breath as I walk past him so I turned round and replied loud enough to hear "Don't be racist!" It stopped him in his tracks because he just looked at me and didn't say anything. I guess he wasn't expecting me to say anything back.

I don't know what the solution is as there will always be racist idiots,
and unfortunately, Coronavirus seems to have given some a pass to be even more so.

I guess if it's taught me anything, then it's given me more practice at calling out racism from strangers.
