Cancer screenings paused in Scotland

I don’t understand - how can this be right? I understand that it’s screening of a largely healthy population, but surely a lot of cancers are picked up by screening (otherwise they wouldn’t bother with it). And cancers such as cervical cancer often don’t present with symptoms until it’s more or less too late! What am I missing? Genuine question as this is really worrying me!

My mammography was cancelled last week - appt was on Wed 1st. Given the appt was already 6 months late, it’s not ideal. Having said that, I’m fortunate that I had a private one a year ago as I was living in a different country, but the NHS doesn’t know that. I’m not surprised though, the last thing they want to deal with is more people needing further screening, a percentage of whom will end up needing treatment.

Btw, not saying it’s right, just that I’m not surprised!

ShastaBeast · 30/03/2020 14:31

In England but GP cancelled all cervical screening unless previously abnormal. I’m tempted to go private. Who knows how long this will go on for and unfortunately it will cause deaths.

Sleepthief · 30/03/2020 14:35

That's what worries me. Are we essentially saying one sort of death is worse than another? The deputy chief medical officer said yesterday it would probably take 6 months to get back to normal - what impact will that have on cancer survival rates. And if it's happening in this area, it is probably happening in other areas...

They cancelled my mammogram which should have been last week. I don't mind. Too much of an infection risk in my opinion so I think stopping for now was the right thing to do, it's one of those you're damned either way...

The government predict 80% of the population could catch coronavirus. 80% of women will not get cervical or breast cancer. The figure for cervical cancer an posted by Cancer research UK state your lifetime risk of cervical cancer is just 0.65%. However usually we are told we MUST book our smear it's IMPERATIVE We smear. This cancer is waiting to kill u!! Typically it takes many years to develop and thorough risk assessments were carried out before deciding to pause the programmes. However these programmes are now victims of their own hype and women can't understand why they are paused!! The smear test was never put through random control trials...comparing smeared and unsmeared women. It was just inflicted on us. Out of 30 million UK women around 900 a year die of cervical cancer. It's hardly rampant. One third of these women are completely up to date with their smears. ..

Kat786 · 31/03/2020 12:02

Oh and by the way doctors get financial incentives if they can get 80% of their women patients to "accept " their "invitations " to smears. It's all about the profit ladies!!
