Cardiovascular and diabetes - why not on the shielding list?

Have things changed? Reports from the WHO indicated these conditions had the highest death rates for coronavirus.. Why hasn't the UK government included them on the shielding list?

Is it the sheer number of people it would include?

I’m a type one diabetic so don’t need to shield for that, I don’t have a spleen so thought I might get a letter/text but nothing has arrived.

I suspect you're right. I'm concerned because my uncle has both cardiovascular issues and type 2 diabetes (he's never been overweight and doctors think it's genetic as there's a strong family history). He's also on the drugs that increase the risk, the ACE inhibitors. I'm worried about him. He thinks it's ok to keep going for his daily walk because he's not in the "extremely vulnerable" group.

Have you asked your doctor if you should shield because of no spleen? Can you wfh and shield anyway to be on the safe side?

Can anyone link the WHO death rates by co-morbidities?

I’d quite like a look (not least as I’m wondering about how they allow for differences in international standards and chances of certain conditions being diagnosed at all)

And also if they’re reporting the number of deaths, of the death rate by condition (how are they capturing underlying conditions amongst the recovered)

I think I’m not included as I’m not antibiotic reliant, I’m already working from home.

This hasn't been updated since 24 Feb so perhaps things have changed. If not, it indicates our government is not protecting the most vulnerable. The highest mortality rates are cardiovascular, followed by diabetes. Higher than respiratory and cancer.

I think the extremely vulnerable list includes everyone with next to no immune system, due to chemotherapy or immune suppressant drugs. If they get Corona virus then they have no natural defences.
I think the other groups have a higher risk of complications/ severe cases but they do still have a working immune system and most people will still be ok.

That's my reading of it anyway.

@justmyownexperience if it's any help I saw a short article on the bbc news page the other day about ace inhibitors, which lead to a yougov web, page that said there is no evidence that taking them leads to more severe coronavirus. Haven't got a link, but you may be able to find it. Similarly there is no evidence that nsaids make it worse either. It would seem that these were just unfounded rumours.
