Is psoriasis a pre-existing condition (coronavirus)?

I have seen a news report which mentions the death of a person and psoriasis as their pre-existing condition.

Does having psoriasis make you a vulnerable person?

Watching with interest, my dh is riddled with it.

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 21:06

It could be indicative of another underlying, comorbid underlying autoimmune condition, undiagnosed. Possibly.

sleepwhenidie · 29/03/2020 21:07

It is an auto immune condition so would make sense I think....

Alarae · 29/03/2020 21:07

Seen comments that psoriasis is caused by an issue with the immune system, so I would assume it should be considered a pre-existing condition.

Not a health professional in any capacity though so just passing on what I have read.

RandomMess · 29/03/2020 21:07

People with psoriatic arthritis often take immune suppressing drugs which increase your risk factor.

Psoriasis itself is an auto-immune condition which does raise your risk slightly according to guidance. For the news to mention the patients psoriasis I would imagine it's severe or has developed into PA?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 29/03/2020 21:07

Following as I’m also riddled with it Shock

ColleysMill · 29/03/2020 21:08

Might depend if they were on immunosuppressemt meds?

Do you have a link OP? Bit close to me!!

ScarlettBlaize · 29/03/2020 21:08

My husband has it and he also has asthma and possibly the beginnings of arthritis (he's only early 40s). I think it's linked to a lot of auto-immune stuff

mynameiscalypso · 29/03/2020 21:09

Psoriasis can also be linked with heart problems - as others have said, often the medication for it supports see your immune system. If you're only multiple types of medication or steroids, you're in the particularly vulnerable/shielded group. If you're not on any medication, the risk is only very marginally higher.

sleepwhenidie · 29/03/2020 21:09

Though reading further, I think the drugs used to treat the autoimmune disorder make you vulnerable (by lowering your immune response), so unless psoriasis is so severe that someone is on such drugs to treat it (which I think is very rare bc long term side effects?) then not an issue.

@ScarlettBlaize get your DH to push to be investigated for PA as early treatment can really help prevent the joint damage it causes.

Quartz2208 · 29/03/2020 21:11

Is this the 14 year old Portugese boy who died?

TiddleTaddleTat · 29/03/2020 21:12

Gosh I'm surprised by this. I get psoriasis as do most other first generation family members. Also eczema, and coeliac in my case. I think I have CV currently, FWIW.

RandomMess · 29/03/2020 21:12

DH take methotrexate (chemo drug) for his PA.

He is very worried Sad

Jobseeker19 · 29/03/2020 21:14

I have psoriasis in my scalp so it has made me question if I should even be going outside for exercise or to the shops.

I dont take any medication for it as it doent really bother me.

Is is the medication or the condition itself that poses a higher risk?

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 29/03/2020 21:16

I have Ps and PsA and am on a biologic after having a major flare about 6 months ago. I spoke to my doctor last week and he was very confident that I should just follow the general advice re social distancing and that there was no need to self isolate at all.

RandomMess · 29/03/2020 21:17

Both.

I believe having the condition is a slight increased risk, certain medications would then increase that risk further to High/Increased.

If you can get out and sit in the sun it will help your Psoriasis, only you can decide if you wish to shield.

swlondonnanny · 29/03/2020 21:17

I would say medication but I am not medically trained

ColleysMill · 29/03/2020 21:19

Im on biologics for psoriasis (not psoriatic arthritis) and from what I've see/read looks like im classed as moderate risk but only take this one drug and have no other comordities.

RandomMess · 29/03/2020 21:21

Biological I would expect to be less of an increased risk than the other immune suppressing drugs as they are more targeted rather than suppressing your entire immune system IYSWIM

mynameiscalypso · 29/03/2020 21:24

There is a guide here as to medications and the various risks:

https://www.rheumatology.org.uk/Portals/0/Documents/Rheumatologyadviceecoronavirusimmunosuppresseddpatients_220320.pdf?ver=2020-03-22-155745-717

One drug (whether methotrexate or a biologic) on its own isn't a significant risk factor.

ColleysMill · 29/03/2020 21:24

Looks like an increased risk if you are ona combination of medication.

But yes also increasing evidence that psoriasis is linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/03/2020 21:25

Is that true? I was reading this: www.bad.org.uk/shared/get-file.ashx?itemtype=document&id=6648 which attempts to quantify risk.

ColleysMill · 29/03/2020 21:27

Ah thats the one @OhYouBadBadKitten Smile

That's from the British Association of Dermatologists so a good source :)
