Been in isolation for almost 2 weeks - what are the shops like at the moment?

Hi,

I’ve been in isolation with my 4 year old and husband as my son developed a fever. We are able to leave the house again (obviously following the guidance) on Tuesday.
We will have to go to the supermarket as we are unable to get a delivery. Just wondering what the shops are like at the moment? Long queues? Low stock? Not sure if I should do the big supermarket, little local supermarket (Sainsbury’s local/coop etc) Aldi, or try a local farm shop/butcher etc.
I’ve been desperate to get out, but now it’s here I’m starting to worry about it...
Many thanks

Not sure about where you are, but here in the SE, the shops are restricting how many customers can go in at one time. Some are stopping children going in with adults. Stock levels are starting to return to normal. Bread, loo roll and tins are still low.

Thanks vintagegoth. I’m in the East Midlands. Luckily we won’t have to take the 4 year old with us.

In London you have to queue outside, but once you're in they pretty much have everything and it's calm. Quite a nice shopping experience really if you can forget about the circumstances for a while.

Anyone been to the shops today,l? How did you get on?

I’m in the Midlands I went to Tesco after work (5 finish) I had to queue to get in but not for long. Agree with what Hotcuppatea said

Thanks Teapot.

We're in Staffordshire. Went to Morrison's today at about 2pm. No queues but a one way system and markers on the ground to show distancing.

First time I've been in a big supermarket for over 2 weeks as we have been managing with what we have and have walking to our local butchers and co-op.

It was pretty bleak, loads of people were wearing masks, everyone is very awkward and avoiding each other like their life depends on it. There was plenty of food on the shelves though. So stock levels are certainly better.

I couldn't wait to get out of there and am certainly not looking forward to doing it again.

BG2015. Thank you, I’m wondering if I should avoid the big supermarket and try the smaller ones. But I’d ideally like to just shop once every 2 weeks so could do with a big supermarket top up.

Im finding supermarkets grim tbh, im working in a city centre and have found that i can do my shoping using a combination of Tesco Express and Morrisons local!

Drivemybluecar · 30/03/2020 20:42

I’m in Suffolk. Went today. Missing some things like beans and pasta. But there was a ton and I mean a ton of meat they even had it stacked on the end of the aisle. The loo roll was stacked on both sides of the aisle as well. The shop was empty and calm. Only one lady insisting we all stayed away from here and needed her aisle to be empty.

HoneyBee03 · 30/03/2020 22:08

We did Aldi and Sainsburys recently and the queues looked long but moved quickly, as no one is hanging around for long inside. Saturday morning and the shelves were completely stacked, not a thing we couldn't get. Plus its actually really nice to not have anyone pushing and shoving, no noisy kids and plenty of space to get on with your shop.

East muds here, walked straight into local aldi tonight, meat, veg, loo rolls, hand wash, milk, eggs all available. Bread was so plentiful that I got a reduced loaf.

The only things low on as far as I could see was pasta and rice.

BlackeyedSusan · 30/03/2020 22:20

not sure but someone from church delivered a bag of fresh fruit and veg and 12 pints of milk and two loaves of bread so there was something in Morrisons today.

Have a vulnerable child, and self isolating like you due to a temperature.

PotholeParadise · 30/03/2020 22:24

South-West here. Basically normal, apart from pasta, but with restrictions on how many of any individual item you can buy. Could even buy toilet tissue today!

Frankiecandle · 30/03/2020 22:26

Tesco was fine this morning. Plenty of stuff on the shelves except for teabags and pasta.

No queues and it wasn't really that busy.

safariboot · 30/03/2020 22:27

West Midlands, stock mostly fine but don't be surprised if a few things are absent. (No rice or loo roll last time I was in Tesco). Queues variable, and they look longer than they are because of the 2 metre separation.

beachcomber70 · 30/03/2020 22:34

In Somerset, every corner shop well stocked, always bread and milk. The big supermarkets usually have a long queue so I don't go there and know nothing about their stocks.

My Lidl's is pretty much fully stocked, people allowed in with a gap in between so a small number of shoppers at one time. Plenty of fresh veg but no eggs.

People are allowed in singly. When a couple [middle aged] were asked if only one would shop and the other wait outside they kicked off big time, were very rude to the assistant, called her a c*nt, then roared off in their far from impressive car at 45 mph because they were so important. Idiots.

Interestingdrug72 · 30/03/2020 23:42

Fine. Queuing to get in to some bit only 5 mins max and then nicely spaced out.

Random18 · 30/03/2020 23:47

DH got macaroni, risotto rice and paracetamol tonight. As well as other stuff.

As long as I have pasta or i can make a risotto DS is happy.

Cinderbelly · 30/03/2020 23:56

West London here. DH went today and got eggs, toilet roll, pasta and bread (been missing all of these for a good few weeks)
Still no mince, rice, beans or tinned Tomatoes. But definitely more stock than before

Summerdays2014 · 31/03/2020 07:03

Thanks everyone.
