An hour a day?

Is this the amount of time we're allowed outside and where does it come from? I've heard so many conflicting times that I just don't know anymore. One person told me half an hour (barely enough time to leave the house) and a friend just told me as much as you usually do in day (for me that would be 2 hours). I asked my dog walking friends what they thought and it was no clearer. I don't think BoJo and his team have been explicit, have they? I just want to know because whilst I am being really careful, I don't want to get whacked with a fine for being out longer than my allotted time!

I haven’t heard a time specified by the officials if you will. Only by random people on the internet.

MadamePewter · 29/03/2020 19:45

There is no specified time. You are allowed outside to exercise and there is no time limit.

dementedpixie · 29/03/2020 19:46

There is no strict limit. I think Michael Gove made a suggestion of 1 hour walk/30 minute run but it's not an actual limit

ShellsAndSunrises · 29/03/2020 19:47

There’s no specified time, or distance from your house.

People just either make it up, or get confused with the rules of other countries, I think.

Ellie56 · 29/03/2020 19:48

Michael Gove says half an hour for a run, an hour for a walk.

beachcomber70 · 29/03/2020 19:48

I think there was mention of 30mins -1hour by Michael Gove this morning.

dementedpixie · 29/03/2020 19:48

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51506729 this mentions the Michael Gove comment

Mysocalledlifexx · 29/03/2020 19:49

I thought it was upto 1 hour.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 29/03/2020 19:50

There was a Dr, who also advised the government, on BBC news today stating categorically that it's only one period of exercise per day and for no longer than an hour.

He also said that a parent couldn't do one hour for themselves and then take their children for an hour.

Not sure if it's available to watch again anywhere but he was very clear about it

Reginabambina · 29/03/2020 19:50

You are allowed to be out as much as you like given you have a reasonable excuse to leave your house. In practice you should be going out as little as is practical.

Reginabambina · 29/03/2020 19:51

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras so? He’s not a lawyer so not exactly qualified to give an answer here.

puds11 · 29/03/2020 19:51

What Gove said is a suggestion though not an order.

SorrelBlackbeak · 29/03/2020 19:53

There is nothing at all in the legislation saying how long you are allowed to be out for.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 29/03/2020 19:56

Reginabambina

Why does he have to be a lawyer? He was explaining what we need to do in order to minimise infection. Not sure a lawyer is qualified to answer that

MadamePewter · 29/03/2020 19:57

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras I am a lawyer and that is rubbish. The legislation is clear. No time limit, no “one time a day”.

longearedbat · 29/03/2020 19:58

Read the legislation. There is no time limit mentioned. Doesn't matter what any goverment official says, if there is no time limit mentioned, you cannot be fined for being out for 'too long'. No court in the land would find you guilty of an offence that isn't specifically laid out in an act.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 29/03/2020 19:58

Boris gave NO time restrictions, the government website gives NO time restrictions

Boris said you can go out ONCE a day to exercise as in walk, run, cycle when he addressed the nation

I’d say If you live somewhere you can walk and not see others, then walk as long as you wish but only once a day! In a built up area it must be difficult to avoid others so be out as little as possible as you have a higher risk of getting this virus

MadamePewter · 29/03/2020 19:58

Legislation is the law btw. As in what the Government has made the law. Not anyone’s interpretation.

Reginabambina · 29/03/2020 20:00

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras because the question here is what the law allows not what should we do to minimise infection. It’s a point of law not epidemiology.

GoofyLuce · 29/03/2020 20:04

Just use your common sense. Go for a walk, run, whatever for however long it takes for you to feel satisfied. Just don't take the piss and stay out all day!

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2020 20:07

There is no time limit.
People seem to enjoy making up extra rules.

pickingdaisies · 29/03/2020 20:33

Recommended by a spokesman that normal amount of exercise for you is ok. But only once a day, and if you live in a built up area, then more than 1 hour would make it difficult for people to practise social distancing. Gove suggested that an hour is about right for a walk for most people. And half an hour for a run for most people. But it's what is normal for you, and using common sense, and not being selfish if others are also trying to get outside where you live.

Sherloidbaisherloid · 29/03/2020 20:39

NHS guidance states one hour a day outdoor exercise

dementedpixie · 29/03/2020 20:42

No it doesnt

MadamePewter · 29/03/2020 20:44

The actual law does not specify a time or how often: read the statutory instruments
