OK so how likely are we to get Coronavirus if we abide by the lockdown?

I’m going out about once a week to get groceries for a couple of elderly friends and neighbours. I am doing everything possible to avoid contact in the supermarket (self scan etc) and use hand gel in the car and wash them when I get home, all shopping is wiped down with antibacterial spray when we get home. I’m going for a walk outside daily (live in a rural area) but very easy to stay a safe distance from anyone if you see them.

Dh is working from home, kids are off school. Kids not going anyway apart from odd bit of exercise. Hands washed as soon as they return.

So we shouldn’t get it right?

If we could get it, how would that be?

I don't know but following as very worried about first trimester risk to baby development!

BroomstickOfLove · 29/03/2020 19:20

You are unlikely to catch it now, but you might have already caught it before the lockdown started.

Wannabangbang · 29/03/2020 19:22

Got same questions op, me and my children aren't even taking walks. I see it as too risky. We excercise indoors and in garden on sunny days. Avoiding shops like the plague, only shopping locally as too scared to do the tesco thing and i don't drive so i can't manage the walk home with it. So once a week i take bits to my vunerable mother and once a week go to local shop. Same washing hands, just got gloves for next time and a cotton scarf to wear round my face. Wash hands when home, i even wash my clothing I wear to shop and my coat. Being a single mum I'm too freaked out by getting this and them not having a decent parent

Crunchymum · 29/03/2020 19:23

How long will we need to be clear before we can have a good idea we don't have it?

I've been home and seriously social distancing for 12 days, kids for 10.

Wannabangbang · 29/03/2020 19:25

Weve been home 15 days

Freshairimportanttoo · 29/03/2020 19:26

Your chances of catching it will be dramatically reduced but as pp said you may already be incubating it.

Antibacterial doesn't kill covid. Imagine decanting or washing produce that's coming in.

Remember post may also have it.

A scarf won't stop covid either.

HarrietM87 · 29/03/2020 19:26

I think a tiny minority (less than 1%) took longer than 14 days to show symptoms, but half of people will get them within 5 days, so you’re almost certainly ok now.

Freshairimportanttoo · 29/03/2020 19:27

Not imagine. I am washing

Wannabangbang · 29/03/2020 19:27

Im wiping down all parcels down with dettol neat and post with antibac wipes and not opening it for 9 days

Reginabambina · 29/03/2020 19:29

Unless they develop a vaccine most people will get it eventually I suppose.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/03/2020 19:31

Surely post is safe long before that ? I thought it could only live for a short while on cardboard or paper ? I have been leaving post alone and then opening after a couple of days. Is that a risk ?
I have washed all shopping in warm soapy water, or wiped with alcohol wipes. Now worried that isn’t enough ?
We have been in for almost 14 days.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/03/2020 19:33

Dd started showing symptoms this friday

The last time she left the house (And therefore had contact with anyone) was last Friday

thepeopleversuswork · 29/03/2020 19:34

I have been wondering this. Have been social distancing borderline isolating for two weeks as has DD (off school a week before lockdown) one supermarket trip a week ago.

The only thing that scares me is I had to go to pharmacy five days ago and that’s bound to be an absolute hotbed.

I will feel more relaxed when I have a clear week away from that.

Technically it’s 14 days but I have heard that from about a week after last contact your chance of developing it decreases significantly. I would feel a lot more if I were able to avoid supermarkets completely.

Stupidanduseless · 29/03/2020 19:35

Ultimately it’s not the plague.
Unless we live like this forever - we are all going to get it.

Parker231 · 29/03/2020 19:35

Social distancing is best way of preventing the spread of the virus. When you go to the shops or to work you come into contract with people who may have the virus.

Post doesn’t need spraying with anything. All you need to do is wash your hands after handling it.

Derbygerbil · 29/03/2020 20:00

Got same questions op, me and my children aren't even taking walks. I see it as too risky.

Why do you believe it’s too risky? If you stay well away from others the risk is negligible to zero

Greenpop21 · 29/03/2020 20:05

An expert said post and fabrics were very low risk, hard surfaces higher risk. I’ve been off school since we closed but been to supermarket once a week. I wash hands and stay away from people. I don’t wash food unless it’s fruit and veg but I do that anyway. I’ve been taking anti viral wipes to the supermarket for the last week to clean my trolley handle. I also use them on my phone, door handles, steering wheel, keys and remote controls daily.

Greenpop21 · 29/03/2020 20:06

I make sure I get outside once a day for a walk with my dog. Mental health is as important.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 29/03/2020 20:09

I found this article useful from a woman who had no immune system after a bone marrow transplant.
Wash your hands religiously and don’t touch your face.

OP I've done everything you have done for the past 10 days. I leave my shoes outside the house before I enter. I go straight upstairs to wash and I have been wearing a mask.

Yesterday I started to show symptoms and today I feel horrendous. There are 4 of us living in this house DH(50) DD(16) DS(5) nobody else is showing symptoms apart from ds complaining of a slight sore throat but still running around everywhere.

I'm petrified, I feel lonely and don't know what to do or where to put myself. It's a very scary time as I suffer from asthma.

Mollie3 · 29/03/2020 20:49

@Mycatismadeofstringcheese
Really interesting article I do think many of us neglect the simple but very effective steps outlined here!
