If you normally limit tv watching. How much tv are you letting your kids watch. Mine is increasing by the day.

I've stopped checking. I just try and move them on every so often and send them out to the garden once a day. Make sure they do homework etc. If they fill up the blanks with TV and video games, so be it.
I can't do more

But mine are pre teen and teens , yours may be younger.

I’m not timing it to be honest. I’m making sure they do lots of other things (playing outside, reading, crafts, playing, school work) but otherwise they can watch TV if they want. These are exceptional times.
They’re 6 and 4.

We've managed to make some sort of routine..it does vary and it's not strict, might change. But it goes roughly like this : all tech goes off at 9am. We do reading, learning games or art etc till lunchtime, around 12 ish, one hour for lunch, tech is allowed. 1pm till 4..or 5, no tech, unless they are on a learning app/ website, and obviously not on all afternoon. From 4 or 5pm ( depending on how the day is going!) They've been allowed it. However, they have also been having regular time outside, last week most afternoon outside in the garden

LoisLittsLover · 29/03/2020 15:17

Weekend is reasonably unlimited.

Weekdays she can Watch before 9 and after 4

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/03/2020 15:56

Not timing it. We're doing schoolwork in the week and go out for exercise once a day but if he just wants to watch TV the rest of the time I'm letting him.

screamer1 · 29/03/2020 16:18

Ok maybe I need to loosed your a bit. We've been trying to stick to usual 30 minutes a day (kids are 3 &5).

They're currently watching a film, but just wondering the rest of the time.

I'm not even counting but I would estimate at least 4 hours. DD is 3, we have a newborn.

I feel mildly guilty but I also think fuck it, why make life hard for ourselves. She's gone from being in full time childcare to having both parents at home with her all the time so I reckon they cancel each other out.

Goingtobeoldearly · 29/03/2020 16:30

If it helps, if you're sitting together watching a film , you could try and ask questions about what's happening and keep them engaged with you, in that way. It can also lead onto doing things away from the tv. For example, say the film is finding Nemo...you can then work on a small project about different fish, or underwater creatures, you could link art to the activity. TV doesn't have to be a bad thing and sometimes it's good to relax

Knocksomesense · 29/03/2020 16:33

Ours is unlimited. But they get bored and go and do other stuff. I work in the mornings and so they are screen free then. Our boys are 2 and 3

pocketem · 29/03/2020 17:03

Doesn't really matter.
I watched TV nonstop as a kid and ended up ok

alliejay81 · 29/03/2020 17:22

Normally tv is limited to 40 mins during the week, then one movie and an hour of Xbox/switch at the weekend. I've currently relaxed this to 1 hour during the week and unlimited at weekend.

Homeschooling worked ok for us last week and behaviour has been surprisingly good. Home is still a fairly happy and stable place. I'm keen to try and maintain some sort of structure during the week but may relax it further if required. I think it really depends on your individual circumstances.

screamer1 · 29/03/2020 22:12

@alliejay81 we're generally similar and it was ok for us last week too. I broke the day up with a bit of tv in the middle of the day as a incentive for the morning doing structured stuff. So hard to know if we're getting it right.

Weekdays we dont have screens between 9am-3pm , and weekends it is pretty unlimited. I try and just vary it a bit so it's not constant you tube. So will get them to watch films/series amongst the computer games and you tube. They are 8 & 6.
