Better to WFH or be furloughed?

First of all, I don’t want to sound ungrateful as I know in this current climate I’m so lucky to still have a job but I wouldn’t mind other people’s opinions on my current situation.

So I’ve been asked by my company to WFH for the duration of this uncertain period (however long this may be) whilst most of my other colleagues who do the same job have been furloughed.

Now I don’t know who’s got the better deal as I’ll still be working full time hours while my other colleagues are doing nothing and still getting 80% of their wage.

A few of them were boasting about it on social media earlier while I was sitting at my desk stressing (and doing their workload), and it just got me thinking..have I been given a raw deal or should I be glad I’m still working?

I'm also glad to be working from home as I hope it means I'm more likely to have a job at the end of it. Of course I could be fooling myself and anything could happen but the fact they want me to perform my duties means that for now at least I'm considered necessary. That means one tiny bit less worry in the short term.

I’m still going to be working all the hours under the sun for a measly amount more money

But they may, in the very near future, not have a job at all. In normal circumstances you would be doing the job anyway, just carry on as normal & block their ‘oh yay, holiday’ posts. They won’t be so happy in a few weeks if they are actually made redundant. You have security -these are uncertain times so it’s you they should be envious of.

I am so relieved to still be working and terrified of being furloughed.

Haveittheright- I see what you mean, thanks for the reassurance. Time will tell I suppose. In truth, I don’t think anyone should be envious of anyone else right now as it looks as though we’re all in the same (sinking) ship...

Yeah it's various shades of shit. No one is benefitting from this.

2)I don’t know if my employer qualifies for the scheme yet

This is an important point that many are missing.

My sister runs a business and has applied for her employees to be furloughed. She’s filling in forms and has to prove she can’t afford to pay them. This includes declaring how much money is in the bank. She could pay them for a few months where nothing is coming in but then will be starting from a zero bank balance. This would probably mean the business goes under as she wouldn’t be able to pay her staff when they all come back as she wouldn’t be paid for the work they do for at least a month (probably more). I presume the government will take this in to account but it isn’t as simple as everyone gets paid 80% of their salary for no work.

Ive been furloughed as have all of my colleagues.
Im confident at this point i will have a job to go back to.
That might change in a couple of months.
Im getting 80% of my contracted hours.
Which is actually 80% of 60% of my wages because i live off tips which are not accounted for in the government grant even though we pay tax on our tips.
So most of us are losing way more than 20% of our earnings.
Honestly im grateful for what im getting but i would much rather this thing hadn't happened and i could keep doing the job i love and am good at.
Supply teacher i am not.
