Ok, I am prepared to be shot down in flames. Possibly I am a bit stupid for not understanding. Sorry, but there you have it.

Why is it ok to get on a packed commuter tube. It is ok to go to the supermarket full of people.

But .... it is not ok to drive, all alone, to a remote spot where no-one else is, and walk alone in the countryside..and drive alone home again.

I do not get it

I know people will say - 'its essential to get on a packed tube to get to your key worker job. Or it's essential to go to tesco'

But something doesn't seem right to me.

What the hell is wrong with a walk in the middle of nowhere, where you will share zero germs or droplets with others?

Why do the government say you can walk near your home (where there are loads of other people doing the same), but you can't walk further away where there is no one.

Confused.

You answered your own question, it's not essential. Also because lots of people are driving to these areas to walk because they are stuck in and bored. So there is a chance of passing it on and you're also increasing the risk of the people local to that area. In addition if you break down and need to be recovered you also risk the person doing that.

We think the same. We are maybe 10 mins, max 20 mins into the heart of the Lake District ( Buttermere to be exact ) and surrounding . We are being told it is a no go area . They will however allow us to walk up and down paths avoiding people by walking into the road.
How I understand it they don't want people to say I can be in xyz in under 10 ,20,30 + minutes to get to these places, also would be extra folk out and about in cars potentially causing an accident which would need people and hospitals etc. It sucks and I hate it , but I am taking heed of what they are saying.

The difference is that it is not essential. Exercise can be done locally - you just need to keep away from parks and pretty bits of town and exercise on the quiet back streets

If people can’t grasp this, expect further restrictions, such as in France where there is a limit on how far you can be from your home address for anything other than work or essential medical/care reasons (for which you might need to produce proof)

Because you get scenes like last weekend where the world and its dog all head to the same remote beauty spots and social distancing is wiped out.

QforCucumber · 28/03/2020 11:34

Because to do that drive you and every single other person who decides to do it needs to get petrol, has to go in the car and risk accidents and put added pressure onto an already pressurised nhs.

SlipperyLizard · 28/03/2020 11:34

The risk of one or even a few people doing this is clearly small. But what if everyone followed suit?

A lot of these places are quiet because every one else is following the rules and staying near home. The few who aren’t seem to think the rest of us wouldn’t like a nice walk in the Lakes, Peak District etc.

If a minority of people continue to be irresponsible then we’ll end up restricted to a certain distance of our homes (Ireland is 2km).

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 28/03/2020 11:37

Because:

A) Lots of other people may have the same idea so what should be a deserted spot would not actually end up being so;

B) With the NHS so stretched we need to minimise the risk of road traffic accidents; and

C) It risks spreading the virus around. If you have people coming from lots of different areas to a rural beauty spot and they end up climbing over stiles or touching a fence post, then they can all end up bringing the virus back to their towns.

Makes sense to me. Be thankful that you can even go for a walk around your neighbourhood at the moment 🤷‍♀️

Because this lockdown is a pointless waste of time in the main, although it will slow transmission so we all get covid 19 just over a longer time frame, and then have to live in the ruins of the economy we decimated so pointlessly?

StirCrazed · 28/03/2020 11:42

In a lockdown where off licences are considered essential and keyworkers work at poundland, don't be looking for logic.

Redcrayons · 28/03/2020 11:50

Where do you draw the line? If five minutes drive is OK, 10 is not that much more so that should be ok too. And then we end up with what happened last weekend, with every man and his dog crowding into these 'remote' places.

iVampire · 28/03/2020 11:58

BBC reported that Snowdonia had its highest ever visitor numbers last weekend.

You’re allowed out to take exercise, not to go somewhere scenic whilst you’re doing it.
