Organ donation

I know this sounds really really morbid but can I just remind everyone to make sure their organ donation wishes are up to date.

Does anyone in the NHS know whether organ donations are currently going ahead or if they have all been cancelled.

Although it's all changing on 20 May 2020 but think you still have to register your wishes.

They haven't yet been cancelled but it's likely they will be as the situation gets worse. Although life saving, they are an elective surgery and depending on the organ can have lengthy recovery times in hospital plus ICU stays etc.

I've also heard if you die of (or with) CV you will be unable to donate.

Oh. I though it would just be lungs that weren't suitable for donation.

The infection damages the lungs (and heart to a lesser extent), but can be present in any tissue so you run the risk of infecting the recipient who would then catch the virus while on high doses of immunosuppressants and steroids.

Not to mention risking the medical teams who perform the surgeries.

I haven't heard it would be a no go from a medical professional but it would make sense at least on a biological level (I'm not a nurse or doctor, but have fairly extensive personal experience plus some medical training).

Recipients of solid organ transplants are in the super vulnerable group so I imagine it is a very risky operation to do at present especially in a hospital environment where there is a very high chance of transmission.
