Driving to parents to drop off supplier

My parents live about 1.5 hours drive away. My dad thinks he has started a cough so they want to self isolate for 14 days. We have just finished our 14 days self isolation as a family as my daughter had a temp 2 weeks ago.
My parents have some food in the their house, but obviously can't get any online deliveries for weeks now. (They are in their mid 60s so not 'vulnerable'). We have an Sainsburys delivery coming monday morning - can I receive it, then drive it to them and drop it off so they have at least 10 days or so worth of food to keep them going?
The only friends they really have nearby to help are over 70 and so they definitely don't want to ask them to go and do a full supermarket shop for them.
This does mean at least 3 horus in a car though as a round trip...what are the chances the police would stop me and would this count as a valid reason?
We'd them obviously have to go to the supermarket - which is fine now we're out of isolation. I had kept the delivery slot incase either myself or my husband developed sytmtoms are were still in isolation.

I would go. IF you get stopped, just explain you figured that the caring responsibilities clause applied to you as it doesn’t say there is a distance limit. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just do it. You’re helping a family member and that’s one of the government sanctioned reasons to be out.

I think the new powers have gone to some of the police forces’ heads and they’ve been a bit heavy handed.

MarthasGinYard · 28/03/2020 10:10

Yes I think that would be ok

Delivering groceries to your parents I'm doing the same. Mine are closer though.

catchyjem · 28/03/2020 10:13

It's an essential journey so it's fine.

Hoppinggreen · 28/03/2020 10:17

Mine are 15 minutes away and I will be doing this later today.
I will leave it on the doorstep. I’m also collecting DMs IPad for DH to sort out so we can face time. Obviously I will have to take the iPad back at some point too
At first I refused to take the iPad but without it they can’t get online to do shopping or send emails or speak to us and the GC. It was actually DH who said that we should do it just in case we never see them again
Might sound melodramatic but her and sdad are high risk and until about Thursday they really weren’t taking things seriously enough so the chance of them catching Corona is high we think and if they do their chances of recovery aren’t good.
We will be taking all the precautions we can and not going in the house but I still feel a bit uneasy about it

We are doing shops for both sets of parents - not as far, but it is essential- I think you’re fine.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 28/03/2020 10:19

I did the same thing - similar distance - earlier this week. I'd go for it.

Anotherdayhere · 28/03/2020 10:21

Ok thank you everyone this makes me feel better. I thought it was ok - but it's a bit like when you go through security checks at airport and suddenly panic you may have smuggled 10kg of drugs through!! I got very scared the police will stop me - and I'd panic!! But realistically the worst they could do even if they did deem it totally not essential would be a £60 and sent home I suppose, so that is worth the risk of getting my parents enough food to eat.
Has anyone actually been stopped yet?

Yes I would do it, it sounds like an essential journey to me

For the future you might want to check out your Age UK. I searched for my father who is 90 and will need more supplies and there's a Covid 19 and a Mutual Aid group set up in his area. They can do these sorts of deliveries.
