Anyone else’s student children still in their uni town?

Dd1 is 8 hours away. Planned to pick her up when her lease ends in June. She’s with her best friend and both fine but feeling guilty.
Plus the ‘when can we pick her up’ feeling

Yes. Mine is. Happy enough at the moment in the student house, but what about pick up?
Meant to be going for the year abroad this year too...

tibni · 28/03/2020 14:32

My dd is on her year away and currently in the air flying home. Place she was has far fewer cases but uni and Erasmus say she has to return. She will not get full credit for year

Stereomum · 28/03/2020 14:34

Yes mine is happy in his student house with his gf.

Babyroobs · 28/03/2020 14:35

Yes Ds is stuck in Southampton. He was about to come home just before lock down but then one of his housemates ( shared house with 5 others) came down with the virus so he has to self isolate for 14 days. He has been keeping an eye on sick housemate but I am worried he is going to get it now.

TheDrsDocMartens · 28/03/2020 17:39

@lemontreebird same here. That’s why she’s not going to new /same accommodation. Plan for Belgium in September and was going to travel most of the summer so not home for long.

@tibni that’s a shame about the credit. Must be a way round that

TheDrsDocMartens, I'm not hopeful for the year abroad going ahead. They'll be gutted.

tibni - that's wrong. It's not your dd's fault. Surely an exception can be made, like GCSEs and A levels.

ChristmasTree999 · 28/03/2020 18:52

Yes mine too. Stayed in his flat in Portsmouth. I offered to go and fetch him on Monday night but he was happy to stay - probably safer there! I do worry in case he comes down with it though. I’m checking in with him everyday

missnevermind · 28/03/2020 19:02

Yes. Mines in his student house. Last one left there. His best friend was forced to go home by his granny earlier in the week. He is happy there by himself but phoning me a lot more as he has a lot of time on his hands. He is using the time to finish everything needed.
I let him know he is welcome home and it's safe for him to do his 7 / 14 days here with us but he wants to stay as long as possible.

Tanaqui · 28/03/2020 19:08

Mine is too. I want him to go to my sister but he says all is good there at the moment. Wish he was with me though!

PoetaDeLosSandwiches · 28/03/2020 19:12

Mine is still in her student flat. She was unsure about when to come back and then the travel restrictions came in. She is not alone. Two of her flatmates are international students and are staying put. Another is estranged from his family.

We live in London, so is probably safer in her uni town anyway.

PoetaDeLosSandwiches · 28/03/2020 19:14

We have been chatting a lot more than usual. She is trying to work on her dissertation, but finding it hard to motivate herself.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/03/2020 19:15

Yes mine is stuck in wales its apparently not classed as essential travel just yet so she is staying

FoolsAssassin · 28/03/2020 19:17

Yes, most of her friends are International students and stranded here so they are all hunkering down together for now.
She has year abroad coming too. They have been told to cease Visa Applications and awaiting decision as to what’s happening. At this point she doesn’t want to go and I don’t want her to either.

MissDemelzaCarne · 28/03/2020 19:23

DD was still there post lockdown as she was a student nurse on placement. Her placement was then cancelled but all her friends had already gone.
She was ok for a while but then began to suffer from anxiety so I went to get her today figuring that keeping her safe classed as an essential journey. She’s only a first year so doesn’t have a really established network yet, she’s glad to be home.

TheDrsDocMartens · 28/03/2020 19:33

@lemontreebird dd1 has now been told to complete her application. I think both placements abroad would be safer than her at the moment and one is certainly easier to get to her than at the moment!

TheDrsDocMartens

Apparently the uni have said that x-rays and medicals still need to go ahead for the year abroad. I really can't see them going this year, especially after cutting short the current students' stays, but I bet they'll leave it to the last minute to tell us.

If they just scrap the year abroad, the students could stay in that house for next year, and I wouldn't be worrying about pick up. I can just see them scrapping it after we've picked them up. 4 hours each way.

TheDrsDocMartens · 30/03/2020 15:06

She won’t be staying there anyway. It’s been awful and we are in dispute with landlord. Her friend had somewhere to go anyway.

I thought they might move it to Jan
