Packaging on groceries??

I'm worrying all the time about stuff that's coming in to the house, e.g, packaging on shopping, post, deliveries. No-one else seems to be concerned, is it just me? Should I be? My main fear about shopping isn't actually going to the shops but that everything I bring home will be contaminated. Also worrying about post & ordering anything for delivery for the same reason. I'm not usually germ phobic at all but I can't get my head around this. Any reassurance? Confused

I think the general lack of understanding about how germs are transmitted and picked up can lead to people forming their own opinions of it and they have been created against the backdrop of the 24/7 wall-to-ceiling coverage. Essentially, it's not as bad as you think.
The virus can remain on surfaces but it is still a fragile thing when outside a host. It doesn't replicate sitting on an envelope bag of pasta. So if left will degrade. It's not hard to kill either. Fairy liquid is enough. It works in a similar way to how it cleans your dishes. Once the virus coat is destroyed the DNA is exposed and useless and harmless. Additionally you need a certain amount of it to be on a surface, for you to transfer that to you and to then take it into your body.
It does make sense to take precautions because you have no idea how much of the virus may be present on what you're touching. The best precaution is to simply wash your hands after you've brought your shopping in and put it away. Wipe the surfaces and maybe cupboard handles and other things you touched. You will touch your shopping again when you next take them out your cupboard but that is covered by the advice to wash your hands before you eat and prepare food. The virus can't jump or move and will be degrading over a day or two so less and less will be present.
Try and remember that if it was virulent enough to be easily infecting people through second/third hand transfer on objects then we would all have it by now.

The reason there has been a huge push about washing your hands is because that's enough to stop the spread. There are and have been posters and signs for years about it as it can stop flu and colds too.

@backfarblackcar great post. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply, that's really helpful Smile There just seems to be very little information about the safety of shopping etc. I'm hoping that the chance of anything transferring from packaging is tiny, and if it was a significant risk there would be more emphasis on it on the news etc. It's hard with two young children making sure their hands are washed often enough.
