Private school - what fee reduction have you been given for the summer term?

BunsyGirl · 27/03/2020 21:13

I would just like to get an idea of what (if any) fee reductions people are being offered for the summer term. We have been offered £150 discount per child to cover lunches. I am not particularly happy as our fees cover 8-6 wrap around care. I have been told that another local private school is offering a 10% reduction and their hours are shorter as after school care is an optional extra. I don’t want to get into a debate about whether we should get a fee reduction or not. I just want to get an idea of what fee reductions are being offered.

None at all. We are not being charged for lunches, which is an additional charge usually collected with the fees, but that is all. However they are being taught live in virtual classrooms in their usual lesson slots.

AsiaEbene · 27/03/2020 21:16

Hi,

I haven't been notified of any reductions as of yet, all that was offered were online classes. DS10 would have finished school today for the Easter holidays.

Sammysquiz · 27/03/2020 21:16

Same as yours - just the cost of lunches being deducted. I did expect to pay the majority of the fees as the teachers are going to be doing lessons online, but I expected the reduction in their overheads (hearing, lighting, cleaners etc) to be passed down to us.

girlicorne · 27/03/2020 21:16

No discount here, full fees still due. We pay for lunches on a pay as you go basis (top up an account weekly/monthly etc so I won't need to pay that. DD is getting her full timetable delivered online though so I believe she is getting the best education possible under the current circumstances. they are a business at the end of the day and I want her to have a school to go back to. Whether we will be able to afford the summer term fees is another matter though, my self employed work is hugely reduced and DH is on 80% pay but we will need to see how it goes.

Rhubarbisevil · 27/03/2020 21:26

No boarding fees and 25% off tuition fees.

I think the school is trying to cover the staff costs and has mothballed everything else.

Bugaboob · 27/03/2020 21:32

Surely you’re getting remote lessons?

Bringonspring · 27/03/2020 21:36

I am following. Nothing so far!

writingandspelling · 27/03/2020 21:38

Lunches and 25%.

Has your child come home?
What does 'mothballed' mean?

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 27/03/2020 21:40

Apart of the lunches, I cannot see why they should give further reductions, they are still paying bills and salaries (and most likely doing quite a bit of online learning for your kid)

tulipsrus · 27/03/2020 21:41

Just the cost of lunches
They’ll still be Providing syllabus
Which in my case is bollocks cos I’ll have to be sat there for 5 hours a day supervising

BunsyGirl · 27/03/2020 21:41

@Bugaboob No live remote lessons. We get some pre-recorded videos and PowerPoint displays and a lot of instruction sheets which are difficult for six year old DS2 to follow. Practically no feedback from his teacher all week. It’s taking a huge amount of supervision from DH and myself plus lots of time spent scanning and emailing things back. We pay a hefty fee for 8-6 hours (i.e. we pay for more than just teaching).

OP posts:
BunsyGirl · 27/03/2020 21:43

@TheMotherofAllDilemmas We pay for a lot more than teaching (which we are getting very little of at the moment in any event). We pay for 8-6 care to enable us to work very stressful jobs.

Big debate about fees on our what's app group. No
Reduction offered. Not even for lunch. In fact couldn't wait to state feed due.No remote learning this term. Will see what they offer next term. It's our last term. I pay monthly in slight arrears so will see what they do and then decide. I'm paying for a eduction service so want to see what they provide!

missyB1 · 27/03/2020 21:46

They’ve just announced this evening a 20% discount for trinity term. And you can opt out of extras like speech and drama etc
However they are talking about putting staff on furlough - so I guess that pays for the reduction. I’m staff as well as a parent.

BunsyGirl · 27/03/2020 21:47

@tulipsrus Completely agree with you. My six year old needs constant help and supervision. I am trying to WFH (very involved and stressful job) and it is bloody impossible!

ElfDragon · 27/03/2020 21:48

20% off at one school. Not heard from the other one yet.

Both schools are providing a full teaching curriculum, via online classrooms - I have barely seen my 12 year old all week as has been following standard timetable.

BunsyGirl · 27/03/2020 21:50

@missyB1 Yes, I have no idea why DC’s school are not furloughing some of the staff. It makes no sense whatsoever to keep 500 members of staff on the payroll.

My daughter and I have been setting our own timetable and work this week. Basically here's Twinkl and here are some story ideas and here's a project and off you go! My son's state school has set more work.

silverbubbles · 27/03/2020 21:52

We have just been told we are getting nothing back next term as they are having to make massive investments into new kit etc. Possibly might get something on credit after that..... I am not holding out for much of a rebate as they still have overheads and bills to pay however I am expecting an amazing remote set up next term with jam packed days and loads of extra curricular. I am also expecting lots of direct contact from tutors and teachers.

They need to step up and deliver.

UntamedWisteria · 27/03/2020 21:54

All lessons moved to online.

About £1k a term off fees for Day pupils, substantially more for Boarders.

Potential for further retrospective discount if possible & fees paid on time.

bananaskinsnomnom · 27/03/2020 21:54

The school I work at is deducting lunch and any wrap around care fees. I would have thought they would at least get rid of wrap around costs OP? It’s justified for our school because morning/after school care is done by staff as over time at an additional hourly pay rate, so no overtime wages to pay out so they don’t need to charge for it.

Bluejuicyapple · 27/03/2020 21:55

Haven’t heard anything yet. I’m working in the assumption it will be full fees minus lunch

Neednewwellies · 27/03/2020 21:56

Nothing other than lunches. I know a huge amount of parents will not be able to manage fees.

sm40 · 27/03/2020 21:56

I think there are 2 camps here. Normal service operating but not in school so is that worth a reduction, and those that are not getting their money's worth before we even get into lunches, buildings etc!!!
