Post office?

So, post offices are open as they're deemed essential. But what post could individuals be sending that is essential? Are post offices still open for posting things, or only for their other services?

My FIL wants to post something, the post office is at the supermarket he needs to go to anyway for essential grocery shopping, but he's worried that posting his parcel isn't essential. MIL thinks that if the post office is open for posting things, it's fine for FIL to post it as no individual really posts essential things these days so if they're open they must accept that no one posting things will be posting anything essential. FIL is worried he'll get in trouble and is very keen to follow all rules.
His parcel definitely isn't essential, it's something he sold on eBay.

Can he post the parcel while at the supermarket he is definitely going to go to anyway for essential food (so it's not like he's making an extra trip out or anything).

Returns for items bought online? I’m returning things I bought online. I don’t feel bad. Probably will leave it for a while though as I don’t fancy going out so will do it when I absolutely need to

Our Vet is posting meds to us. Essential!

I am going to post a jigsaw and some sketching pencils to DD1 who lives 350 miles away. Better than ordering some online I think.

Ok thanks. FIL is very sweet man, very worried about breaking the rules and getting in trouble so he was getting quite fretful about this. I wasn't totally sure what to tell him.
I should add he's under 60 and not in any high risk category.

Yes, you can post items. Even back at the war time the post was delivered. Royal Mail is prioritising 1st class though, 2nd class therefore will take longer than usual.

I posted something off earlier in the week. For the 1st time, I weighed the parcel, printed the postage at home and just dropped it outside our post office which has a larger slot.

If he must post something, ask him to do that, then just drop it at their counter/in their slot. No need to also interact with the postal staff.

I've used the post office this week. If it's open it's fine to use. Bless him

I'm going on Monday, need to send stuff back to ASOS for a wedding that isn't happening 🙈

I must admit I did wonder if posting something at the end of my road counted as 'essential' or could be included within exercise - my daughter wants to post some letters to classmates.

It's clearly not essential but we haven't been going out at all so if we went on a walk to a postbox would it be so bad? Argh! Probably?

wetpants · 27/03/2020 21:06

Posting letters to classmates and parcels to loved ones is fine. Please read RM’s updates on their website if in doubt.

Hope they don't close as suspect will end up mailing stuff to dm who is in a vulnerable group and cannot go out.
