School dropped us food parcel

So my son is extremely high risk so we’ve already been in isolation for weeks, with me or another member of the house hold going out to buy food once a week but received a letter yesterday saying no one in the house should go out at all!

so today I received a text from the school saying they had food parcels for children on free school meals I ignored as there’s no way any of us could pick it up but another school mum phones and said they’re doing delivery’s I phoned the school and within an hour they dropped off cupboard essentials, bread, egg and milk cereal etc... so if anyone’s in a bad position try ringing your school.

Thought I’d share as there must be many in my position Smile

That is really supportive of them and I'm sure someone will find it useful. Hope you are all OK.

DippyAvocado · 27/03/2020 16:29

Yes, my school has done the same. Parcels for pupil premium families to collect or dropped off for anyone who can't get out.

Ladyglitterfairydust · 27/03/2020 16:33

Yes, my school has been doing the same. They sent 60 yesterday and will be sending more.

Crikeyblimey · 27/03/2020 16:33

I work for the local authority and we (the wider ‘we’) have been doing them all week. It is really amazing. Taxi drivers and school bus companies (and others) are involved in the deliveries. It is amazing and hopefully will help those really stuck.

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/03/2020 16:36

@Harrysmum2020 who sent the letter saying you should not go out at all? Would you mind posting it while removing identifying details. Wondering why I haven’t had one.

Makeitgoaway · 27/03/2020 16:42

It's been really difficult to work out how best to support FSM families.

Apparently there is a national scheme due on Monday but meantime schools have been trying to work it out. We looked at food parcels but a the time, couldn't get hold of the basics to go in them. We went for Tesco vouchers in the end but they have been inundated so they took a while to arrange and won't suit everyone.

Harrysmum2020 · 27/03/2020 16:44

It won’t let me add pic as I started a new account today because I can’t remember my old one as I haven’t been on here in years it just says nhs on it.
It says “the nhs has identified you, or the named person you care for, as someone at risk of sever illness if you catch Covid 19... then it says the safest course of action is for you to stay at home at all times and avoid all face-to-face contact for at least twelve weeks from today “

I’ve taken a pic though and hopefully it’ll let me post tomorrow

Some amazing examples of humanity out there. Well done all.

Randomschoolworker19 · 27/03/2020 16:55

On Monday I will be going to our local CO-OP to buy food for our most vulnerable families using the CO-OP vouchers our academy has gifted them. Each child get's £20 per week in addition to the vouchers given to them by the government.

Once I'm done I'll be going back into school to help look after the children of our key workers.

In these dark times it's good to keep positive and spread the good things we're doing.

Coronahomeschoolhell · 27/03/2020 17:04

That's fantastic!

The last thing our school did before closing was ask families who could to donate food, loo roll and cleaning products, which were then organised into care packages for those families who needed help the most.

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/03/2020 22:48

Thank you @Harrysmum2020

Rainbowunicat · 27/03/2020 22:50

I know lots of schools that have really done everything in their power to keep communities going. Lovely.

mamasma · 27/03/2020 22:52

I'm wondering where these schools are?my DDs school has said we can get lunches provided but we have to travel 10 miles to the next school every day to collect...1 we are in isolation and two how can we get a bus everyday if I can't even afford lunch!

ineedaholidaynow · 27/03/2020 22:55

Our schools are doing the same. Our local MAT has over 500 food parcels to deliver each week over the Easter holidays

HerRoyalNotness · 27/03/2020 22:56

That’s brilliant!

Our school district handed out 123,000 meals last week (breakfast and lunch) although people had to go drive thru pick up. Next week they’re adding a hot meal back on the luck menu. They’re awesome.

PumpkinP · 27/03/2020 22:58

That’s nice, our school expect us to collect so we’ve declined. Luckily the said they should be sorting vouchers out instead.

makingmiracles · 27/03/2020 23:00

@dippyadvocado those are two different things though aren’t they? Eg my kids are on Pupil premium till sept next year but not entitled to fsm. Schools round here are only distributing them to fsm pupils.

DippyAvocado · 27/03/2020 23:26

Strictly speaking you are right makingmiracles, the pupil premium is attached to anyone who has been enitled to claim free school meals in the last 6 (I think?) years, rather than just those who are currently eligible. I'm afraid in school we get used to using the terms a bit interchangeably.

There was a bit of a to-do on social media in my area when some people thought they ought to get a food parcel from school if their child was in KS1 as all KS1 pupils have the universal free school meal entitlement.

Betty1233 · 27/03/2020 23:29

I’m pleased to read this .

Wilmalovescake · 27/03/2020 23:30

Schools and Local Authorities have been absolute heroes these last two weeks. So much to get sorted so quickly, with no precedent. I take my hat off to them.

AlexaShutUp · 27/03/2020 23:32

Thanks for posting this, OP. Really glad to hear that you received the food package, well done to the school for being able to deliver.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/03/2020 23:35

Our schools have asked parents to pick up if possible, but will deliver if not
