School work over Easter holidays?

I may be missing something but why are the kids having set work to do all over what would have been the Easter holidays?

Just finished dd age 12 home school work with her up to today's date but realised she has been set at least 3 hours a day of work for the whole of next week!

Surely the kids could do with the break with all that's happening? I've already had 3 emails from dd's teacher about work that hasn't been done and they were checking up, but we had done the work together but hadn't been able to tick them off as completed on the school website.

Going to pour a large glass of wine!

I agree it’s too much.

I’m a teacher and we’ve been told that the Easter holidays have been cancelled pretty much. Therefore, we’ll be juggling childcare for Key Workers alongside setting work for pupils.

Scary thing is that half term will likely go the same way, so we’ll be pushing kids to work and work from home and contacting parents to ensure they are doing so.

Ladyglitterfairydust · 27/03/2020 16:20

No one can make you do it. As a teacher I won’t be setting work over the Easter break. I wouldn’t usually be teaching so I’m not setting work. I’ll probably send a message asking them to make sure they’re all up to date ready for the start of the new term, but there won’t be any new work set. However, I imagine some parents will want work because it provides routine and keeps the kids occupied for a few hours a day.

We were physically given a pack of work (maths, literacy, science, phonics + handwriting) to last up until the Easter holiday. So one lesson of each per day - 2 weeks worth. Since then they have set up the online school and are churning out loads and loads of 'ideas' for lessons each day.

There seems to be no info. on how much or little of all this we are meant to be doing. We've been trying to strictly keep to the physical work pack sequence and largely ignoring the online stuff cos there just isn't enough hours in the day and I was looking forward to the break over Easter ! Now i read this! Shock

It doesn't make sense! Teachers need a break from setting and chasing up school work during Easter holidays as well as providing a service for children at school, Dmbl I had no idea that might be the case, so maybe it's only some schools that are asking the teachers to set work. I really appreciate all the work teachers have been doing for our children.

Our ahead told us all we need a break. We will still be keeping school open, but won't be setting any work to send home over Easter.

creaturcomforts · 27/03/2020 16:41

Laiste I'm really struggling with all this, I'm sure you're doing better than I am on keeping on top of things!

I thought about leaving my daughter to it, but there's too many other fun things at home to do!

We are offering childcare over the holiday

No work that would be crazy (although we do have another week before we break up)

MinorArcana · 27/03/2020 17:00

Our Easter holidays are a bit later than yours, but I’m planning on trying to continue with the home schooling throughout.
It isn’t going well so far, schools only been out for a week and we already have some serious catching up to do on the mountains of work already set!
No idea if the teachers will set work for the holidays, I wasn’t expecting anything more than the usual holiday homework pack, but I’ll have to wait and see.

Aside from anything else, with the whole lockdown situation, it’s not going to be possible to take the DC out and about like we normally would, so I’m hoping that getting them to do a bit of schoolwork each day will at least help to keep them occupied.

I've told mine they are working over Easter hols excluding 4 day weekend. Me and DH are both working so I don't want kids on gadgets all the time, but they aren't doing work in the evenings or weekends. Me and DH have May half term off so none of us will work then

milkysmum · 27/03/2020 17:06

You don't have to do the work that's set. It's clear that some schools are setting work, others are taking a very much more laid back approach to the closures. I'm a keyworker ( nurse manager) but thankfully managing to work from home most of the time at present as I have 2 primary school aged children. Their school currently only has 2 children going in and the teachers are looking to close completely if the remaining 2 can make alternative arrangements. They are setting fun engaging activities for the kids to do if they want to. I'm not stressing about it, there will be plenty of time for everyone to catch up on academic stuff when they go back, now is not the time for added stress.

thismeansnothing · 27/03/2020 17:08

Mine wouldn't have broken up till next Friday. So will continue with sschool activities up till then but then will have 2 well earnt weeks off

Lelivre · 27/03/2020 17:08

Doing a little bit each day can help keep some momentum going. When home educating, if we stopped all lessons for a holiday at home, the week back to work meant a miserable battle with the kids. Keeping it going a little bit in the holidays...the app based stuff and the lighter things like art and music is helpful in my experience.

wendz86 · 27/03/2020 17:11

Ours break up next Friday but won’t be doing any school work over the holidays apart from maybe reading .

reefedsail · 27/03/2020 17:15

We are not setting work over the Easter holidays, we are staying open to offer childcare though, including the Bank Holiday.

Derbygerbil · 27/03/2020 17:17

Why would we make things even more difficult than they have to be by cancelling Easter holidays for children... it’s positively masochistic!

Aragog · 27/03/2020 17:20

Our Easter break starts today.

School is open as childcare for the key worker and vulnerable children.

Our home learning platform will not have 'academic' work online ver the next fortnight ie English, Maths, Phonics etc.

But we will put more fun activities on, some links to online provision, links to drawing classes by Lydia Monks, Lego challenges, etc.

But then we have said to parents right from day 1 that everything put online is here for those that wish to use it, and with no expectation from school.

SeaViewBliss · 27/03/2020 17:21

Ours have got another week of school and then I will be giving DS a break of 2 weeks as he would have had at school.

I am struggling to offer him any support because although I am wfh, I am flat out all day.

We all need a break.

creaturcomforts · 27/03/2020 18:23

I've just had an email from my daughters school outlining that the school day should be recreated at home with lessons as at school.

We're taking a relaxed approach to it and still keeping on top of it fine without spending 5 hours a day, it's an unusual situation and I agree with people that are saying it doesn't need to be stressful!
