Prisons stand a better chance of containment than most institutions

How so? People enter and leave prisons all the time. Once an inmate has the virus, it is very very difficult then to stop it spreading amongst the other inmates.

I’m just thinking that they’re never going to be very effective as this virus seems to be incredibly contagious so if you’re exposed to it, you’re going to get it

Yes, this is true. That’s why the lockdown measures have been introduced... to prevent as many people as possible from being exposed to it all at the same time. It isn’t to lessen the number of cases overall, it’s to slow down the spread of cases so that the hospitals aren’t inundated.

It only takes one person from outside a prison to bring it in and then it is probably more likely to spread rapidly than in other environments because of all the shared facilities.

Prisoners haven't caught it by going out, they've caught it from people going into prisons, I'm not sure how this relates to how well a lockdown would work.

The entire operation is to prevent vulnerable people getting it at the wrong time for the Nhs. That is all it is about.
