Ds stranded at university

Ds wanted to remain at uni to see if the finals were going to go ahead. He became ill and then had to go into quarantine so missed his slot for returning by train. We're in lockdown now and he's going to be doing finals online.

In theory, he could return home, but are the trains still running? He's at the other end of the country and I couldn't drive it in one day.

At some point the uni will ask remaining students to leave, so what then?

I don't know if people are allowed to travel, but he can't remain stranded forever. I don't know what to do?

@MitziK I'm from the UK so aware of the differences but some US roads are also pretty busy.
I think the biggest difference is mental because the UK is such a physically small place.
I still think it would be perfectly doable if tiring.

Can you stay with him in his accommodation for one night and do the trip over 2 days?

WorriedMummyNow · 27/03/2020 15:02

@midwestspring is absolutely right. I'm from UK too but used to live in the US and I've done many road trips across both countries (all in manual drive cars). It's doable. UK driving is definitely far more boring though unfortunately!

Sorry if this is hijacking the thread but my DS did come home, fully expecting to be returning after Easter, so all his stuff is still in his room. Now uni has gone online and the privately managed uni accommodation is expecting to be paid rent for a 3rd term even though he is living at home. I want to go and empty his room so that we can argue against the rental. Is this not allowed?

"Train ticket was for Wednesday."

2days ago?

IpeartreeI · 27/03/2020 16:21

Yes, two days ago.

So today is the first day that he could travel due to quarantine?

Can his Uni advise him?

KaptenKrusty · 27/03/2020 17:08

People are still flying home at the minute - also trains are still going, have you even searched the train times to check? Actually you shouldn’t have to - tell your son to look it up and book something - not really your problem tbh - I wouldn’t be bothered picking him up either tbh unless it’s a last resort and he literally can’t get a train home!

Moving house is allowed at the moment so you can go.and collect him I think

OP unless he has an email from his university saying that going home is non-essential travel he needs to book a train even if it is the day before, then get as near to you as possible.

Once he's booked the train if it isn't in your town but 50 miles away he need to email you a copy of the ticket. Then go and collect him making sure you have a copy of the email with you.

If his train does come to your town and he can't walk to your house - his permanent home - he needs to take a taxi, preferably a black cab like one or people carrier, to your house.

He's now told me he's hoping to go to his friends student house in another area next Wednesday. I sent him the info, but he didn't seem bothered. I told him he might get stopped by the police, but he said his accommodation won't last forever and he's going. He has all his stuff to move out.
