Job hunting while furloughed?

swapsicles · 27/03/2020 11:52

I'm in one of the industries hit hard by the coronavirus, currently closed and we are being paid until the middle of April then hopefully at least we shall get the 80% pay.
Obviously this can't go on forever so I've been job hunting.
Depending on what I find and go for what happens with pay?
I don't know if or when I shall return to my current employment, if I only get part time or temporary work then can I do both til I know what's going on?
If I find a decent full time position then I will switch jobs like I would do in normal circumstances,
I'm just afraid of hanging onto my current employer may just leave me in the crap if it all goes Pete tong!
Anyone else the same?

Well I've got an interview next week for a part time job next week in an industry I've experience in and one that's needed right now. It's with the personnel manager so hopefully I'll be able to get some clarity there, don't want to go to current boss for obvious reasons 😁

I’ve started to look to. Sent out a couple of applications.
I quite like my job (don’t love it) but being furloughed hasn’t filled me with long term confidence. Hopefully something will turn up. Maybe it’s the push I need to try something different.

Anyway, good luck with your interview.

You'd need to resign to take up a new role. When you're furloughed, you're still employed. I'd imagine a condition of receiving 80% pay is that you do not work elsewhere.

pinkandblue15 · 28/03/2020 15:08

My furlough contract says I cannot work elsewhere, and must tell my employer if I want to do so as it means I wouldn't be eligible for 80% pay.

So I think you have to resign if you want to start another job.

Potplant · 28/03/2020 15:16

are you allowed to work whilst employed in your current job? I'm not, so I don't think I could take a part time job. Although these are crazy times, so who knows?

I had been looking for a new role since Christmas but I've seen a few things but I haven't applied. I've decided that it's better to have my job with the small amount of security I have plus potential redundancy payment if it does go wrong than a new job, when I don't know anything about the company. I also feel a little disloyal even thinking about it as the MD of the company came round to my house to set me up WFH and make sure everything was working.

You're not allowed to work at another job while furloughed or you won't be entitled to the 80% pay!

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/03/2020 15:43

I'd imagine a condition of receiving 80% pay is that you do not work elsewhere. According to the government website you are allowed to seek work elsewhere with your employer's permission. You need to make sure you're still available for work when the furlough ends
www.gov.uk/lay-offs-short-timeworking/extra-work-or-claiming-benefits

You're not allowed to work at another job while furloughed or you won't be entitled to the 80% pay! Do you have a reference for that?
For some furloughed workers the 80% pay would be considerably less than they could get elsewhere - for example, a part time restaurant worker may well be able to get a full time supermarket job and thus get 39 hours MW rather than, say 80% of 25 hours MW.

As a self employed person who doesn’t qualify for that scheme (new business and haven’t made a profit yet), I’m looking for temporary work.
I now have zero money coming in, so need something quickly.
I’d be upset if I didn’t get something because an employed person on 80% got it instead.

TheTruthAboutLove · 28/03/2020 16:04

@MereDintofPandiculation

That’s not an article based on furloughing. I have been told not to work elsewhere, but I can volunteer whilst furloughed. This is because I’m still on payroll and employed by the company - there is just no work for me to do at the moment.

swapsicles · 28/03/2020 16:12

Under normal circumstances you can quite easily work two jobs, just pay more tax, I have done this in the past.
Surely under furloughing many people must take on extra jobs temporary or not so there must be guidence somewhere

@MereDintofPandiculation apologies, I read an article saying that you can't work during furlough but after double checking it means you can't work for your company.

Apparently you do have to speak to your employer if you want to take on another job though as you're still on their payroll.

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 28/03/2020 16:35

My sister has been put on this 80% leave and the company has made it very clear she will forfit her rights to that pay if she takes another job. Are you serious.. you want the government to pay you and then earn more money! The tax payer will be paying all this back in a years time .. you included. Hope you can afford it!

HarrietThePi · 28/03/2020 16:36

Where did you job search out of interest swap? Just online? I'm going to be in need of a job at some point and don't know what to do. Hoping the freelance work I used to do starts picking up again but that's looking less and less likely. I have a degree but don't have any special skills or experience. Have considered putting the savings I have left into some kind of training or qualification but only want to do that if a decent job is more or less a guarantee at the end of it, and not sure if such a thing exists.

swapsicles · 28/03/2020 16:41

Currently I'm getting paid by my employer not government, this may change though, not sure how long government can pay wages for? I could sit on my bum and do nothing and be out of a job in a few weeks so should I just wait until I'm jobless and can't pay the bills or should I at least try and help myself?

OP posts:
swapsicles · 28/03/2020 16:43

Just on indeed, there's a lot less jobs going but the ones there are generally temporary and urgent or skilled ( where I have applied as I have qualifications, left that industry for reasons that don't apply now)

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 28/03/2020 20:58

Yes you will be paid by you employer but they will claim that back from the government under the new 80% law.. your national insurance number used as identification of who they are claiming back for. By all means get another job but don't expect your employer to pay via the government scheme and get another job.. unless of course you resign. You'll be double matched for your tax/NI no and face fines
