No choice but to go get shopping when meant to be isolating

Pretty much as the title says. I'm meant to be self isolating until the middle of next week but dont have enough food to last until Monday and am still recovering from possible CV (mostly bad cough, headaches and hearing loss at the moment). DP got ill a couple days before I did so is a bit better than me and would be the one to go shopping as he just has a mild cough, but we still shouldn't be going out. The only issue is I can't get food anywhere. No slots for supermarket delivery up until 16th April, cant get amazon fresh and next to nothing on amazon pantry for where I live, cant even get through to ocado and Deliveroo arent doing essentials grocery here. Even tried Beelivery but no drivers would take my order.

Has anyone found anywhere else that has some availability? I dont want DP to have to go out and risk infecting others but at the same time, I'm not going to let my 1 year old go without food. I've also run out of baby wipes and cant get the usual brand anywhere (pampers sensitive). The only ones available are huggies or amazon own brand, both of which have given DD rashes in the past so any advice on where to find some would be appreciated.

Do you have any school age dc? Ours are coordinating shopping for isolated people. Alternatively, contact your mp’s office or local councillors? I bet they’ll know groups doing shopping for people that can’t get out.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 27/03/2020 11:36

There are literally hundreds and thousands of volunteers doing exactly this job. You need to get on social media and contact someone. You must not go out under any circumstances.

Sirzy · 27/03/2020 11:37

Can you not put out a plea on social media?

“In need of some shopping but in lockdown if I transfer the money and send a list could anyone drop a few bits off on our doorstep?”

Msloverlover · 27/03/2020 11:42

You can use old t shirts/bed sheet etc, rip them up and dip them in a pot of water for wipes. Works just as well and eco friendly too. Pop a bit of oil in too if you want. Then just rinse and wash as normal. Did this for a year Until I got lazy and stopped

PicsInRed · 27/03/2020 11:42

Guidance is 7 days isolation for symptomatic cv as opposed to 14 days for more exposure to an infected/symptomatic person.

Are you working on 7 day basis or 14 day basis?

Palavah · 27/03/2020 11:42

Where are you? Have you tried local independent shops? Local Facebook groups?

There are lots of options, please don't expose others.

PicsInRed · 27/03/2020 11:42

*mere exposure.

Palavah · 27/03/2020 11:43

Also for wipes can you use cotton wool and water/oil?

BuddingBaker · 27/03/2020 11:45

I don't really use social media so it hadn't crossed my mind but I'll definitely give it a go, thank you. I wouldn't even consider leaving the house if it weren't for my DD. DP and I can manage without for a week but she can't. I'll see if I can get any help on the local FB pages. Should have enough to last until Sunday at the moment so hopefully will have some luck.

Thanks for the advice!

I'll definitely have a go with old sheets and water for wipes, thank you

PicsInRed we're all isolating for 14 days as DD was the first to get symptoms with a fever and cough and work told DP and I to isolate for 14 days (we both work in NHS). Then DP got ill the nest day and me 2 days after

Facebook is your friend here.

Many of our local bakeries / cafes are doing home delivery.

Put a plea out, someone will help you. You absolutely can not leave your house unless you have completed your isolation.

As for the baby wipes, use cotton wool and water or flannels.

Mrsjayy · 27/03/2020 11:55

Face cloth and water soap so dont worru about baby wipes bottoms/faces were wiped fine before themSmile do you not have facebook? Look on your area for groups they will get shopping

PicsInRed · 27/03/2020 11:57

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/

You isolate 7 days from symptom onset or when you no longer have a high fever if the fever persists longer than 7 days.

In other words, if you were exposed and isolating for 14 days, and developed symptoms on day 3, you would have another 7 days or a total of 10 days isolation.

So, as a symptomatic person, you may already be eligible to leave isolation. Hope that helps.

shookennotstirred · 27/03/2020 11:57

Look for local farm veg boxes, meat boxes. Join/check local Facebook groups

NotGenerationAlpha · 27/03/2020 12:00

Definitely local neighbour facebook groups. We have one in our area, and there are many local butchers, green grocers and catering suppliers who will deliver. As for your baby, someone might be able to get your wipes, or they maybe able to give you loads of old reusable wipes. For example, I still have a whole stack of them from DC2 was a baby. (She's 5 now).

There are lots of really good people out there.

Pentium85 · 27/03/2020 12:00

Where in the country are you OP?

raspberryk · 27/03/2020 12:01

It's 14 days isolation if someone in your household gets it but reducing to 7 days from symptoms starting so if it's been 7 days since your dp had symptoms he can go out and get shopping. There's a gov diagram that's really good at explaining it.

Are there any small convenience stores nearby there are some where I live that are doing deliveries or farm shops / butchers / greengrocers

ifonly4 · 27/03/2020 12:12

There are many local support groups, so worth searching. It's a struggle with restrictions in supermarkets and lots of us shopping or more than our own family, but I'm sure a neighbour, friend or work colleague would get you a few basics.

Gingenius · 27/03/2020 12:16

Hi OP,
We’re in a similar situation except it’s The baby with a fever and DH and I have no symptoms yet... which makes it even more tempting to nip out. But we aren’t. We’re low and food and more importantly calpol. I’ve ended up asking a colleague who lives nearby to try and get some bits for us. I’m also going to ring the pharmacy and see if they can deliver.

Re wet wipes I’ve cut up an old towel and use that with water: I did this pre corona as I found it was much better on his nappy rash than any brand of wipes. Wash them on 60 and you can keep reusing them.

Our local council has set up a vulnerable people helpline that I’ll ring as a last resort for when we’re desperate for food. I’m hoping we can get by on weird tins at the back of the cupboard and whatever my colleague manages to bring.

Just imagine how you would feel if DH infected someone that ended up in hospital. As previous posters have suggested try and get a volunteer to drop off for you. I feel awkward asking people to do it for us but these are difficult times.

minipie · 27/03/2020 12:21

Yes the first person to get symptoms can go out 7 days after they got symptoms
BUT absolutely do use facebook and maybe call your local council, they may have a bank of volunteers (ours does)
Search for covid 19 relief or similar eg coronavirus volunteers any combination of the above

raisydenton · 27/03/2020 12:21

Morrison's doing a special box of essentials for 35 including delivery by dpd. You can't choose what is in it other than veggie or meat.

BuddingBaker · 27/03/2020 12:31

Thank you all for your advice!

I'm in Wiltshire. I do live in a city but it's fairly small and after a major incident a couple years ago a lot of local shops and pubs etc went out of business so there isnt much choice. There are a few convenience stores but they're currently only delivering cigarettes, alcohol and snacks. I've tried the local butchers but they're swamped with orders and only a small family run business. I dont know of any local greengrocers - I always buy fruit and veg from the weekly markets which are now cancelled or tesco. Unfortunately my neighbors are all very elderly so I wouldnt ask them to go shopping for me. Unfortunately over half of our colleagues are self isolating as well and the rest are working overtime to keep the hospital running and struggling to get their own food but I'll ask.

I'll try local facebook groups and see if I get any luck over the weekend. I only use facebook for messenger normally so didnt think to post.

raspberryk I'll have to double check the government guidance in that case.
