Has anyone registered as an “extremely vulnerable person”.

I’m in Australia and my dad (82, with COPD) is in the UZ. So far I’ve managed to keep him fed via my ordering stuff for him online but that’s unpredictable and may get more difficult/impossible.

I’ve just registered him as an extremely vulnerable person which (presumably) means that someone (volunteer?) will drop off some shopping.

Does anyone know how this works, and what happens in terms of payment? He’s very nearly lost a lot of money to phone scammers before so I’m worried about someone calling up, claiming to be the shopper and scamming him.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

He’s in the UK, obviously :).

I have two relatives included my DH registered to this and we've heard nothing. Sod all.

Is he on Facebook? I found some help via a local community group that way.

nomdefuckit · 27/03/2020 11:13

Could try local social services in the long run (probably overwhelmed right now).

Hope you're Dad is ok

JohnandMary · 27/03/2020 11:32

Thanks. He’s ok but a bit lonely. Nowhere near technologically literate enough for Facebook unfortunately :).

I'm an adult care social worker in UK, ring his local authority and refer him, we are getting lots of these calls and expecting more. They will triage and use local support networks

Cornettoninja · 27/03/2020 12:13

Have you checked his local Facebook groups? There’s a lot out there.

I’m about 100 miles away from my dad and he needs support. He’s registered with the local group set up by their MP who’ve also put him in touch with local support under the organisations relevant to his conditions.

I need to check out the NHS provision for these volunteers they’ve recruited as well.

There’s stuff being set up remarkably quickly.

HRH2020 · 27/03/2020 12:20

In the borough I work in this info is passed to the council who will then triage for free food parcels and prescription pick up. There should be a covid 19 helpline on his councils website

yearinyearout · 27/03/2020 12:26

Have you had a look on fb for volunteer groups in his area? We have a local one that are delivering essentials to anyone having to self isolate, they don't have to be in the registered extremely vulnerable group. They are collating deliveries from a cash and carry as well as a fruit and veg wholesaler, but will pick up prescriptions or supermarket shops as well.

Jessicabrassica · 27/03/2020 12:28

Our local group has people posting to say they have family/friends self isolating and they need assistance. The community is sorting them out.

JohnandMary · 27/03/2020 12:37

Thanks for the info everyone. It sounds like registering via the government website doesn’t achieve anything at all, then?!

No it doesn't

Nobody has the slightest clue what it's for

FlemCandango · 27/03/2020 13:36

You have to be registered as extremely vulnerable to get Sainsbury's deliveries.

HRH2020 · 27/03/2020 13:38

Yes it does, the registrations go to the council who then organise the local support. I am working in this sector FYI

HRH2020 · 27/03/2020 13:40

However some people are not meeting the criteria for extremely vulnerable (in a clinical sense) so they need to contact their council

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 27/03/2020 13:42

I've registered and no response except texts to tell you to keep away from your own children for 12 weeks and 'eat a healthy, well balanced diet'.

Easier said than done with no deliveries available anywhere.

I've just found it a wind up.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 27/03/2020 13:48

I have registered, but not had any response. I assume they are still working on setting up whatever responses they plan.

SinglePringle · 27/03/2020 13:53

I’ve registered on behalf of my parents. Both had received the ‘must shield’ letter but I registered them in order that they might receive shipping deliveries. They’ve since had an email confirming shopping priority and instructions as to how to shop online.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 27/03/2020 13:53

There's some talk from Sainsbury's of slots being released next week. But I imagine they'll be for the week after at the earliest?

Porridge anyone? ...Confused

SinglePringle · 27/03/2020 13:53

*shopping deliveries!

SinglePringle · 27/03/2020 13:54

Sainsburys are only going to be delivering to shielded people at this stage. I can log on but it can see I’m not registered as Vulnerable.

nomdefuckit · 27/03/2020 13:56

We're shielding, registered and everything

Can't get a slot

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 27/03/2020 13:57

SinglePringle that's good that they have managed to get slots, maybe there's a backlog or it's just luck who gets contacted?

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 27/03/2020 13:58

Makes me really upset, especially looking out the window at idiots not following the rules and spreading it around.

SinglePringle · 27/03/2020 14:01

Mange no idea but I registered them in the early hours Wednesday and they were contacted yesterday.

I’m able to walk to a supermarket. Went yesterday (first time out in 10 days) and there was a good supply of food and people were being extremely careful about space etc.
