Not just in China...

I’m curious about this too.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 27/03/2020 10:50

Watch pandemic on Netflix. It predicted this virus because of the problems with those markets. It was waiting to happen

They’re disgusting, a assault on animal rights and a breeding ground for cross species viruses like CV

Helpwithaversion · 27/03/2020 10:50

Too little too late now for this pandemic maybe it’ll prevent future ones
Not convinced tbh it started there though but these types of markets shouldn’t be allowed anyway for many reasons

jobhunter7 · 27/03/2020 10:56

Prevention is the best cure.

They're disgusting. Vile. Poor animals.

I have no sympathy for those who "worked" in them. Nothing but sheer scum of the earth.

HatRack · 27/03/2020 11:00

They are disgusting.

And so are China. For allowing them and for trying to pin the virus on the US to cover their own negligence!

jobhunter7 · 27/03/2020 11:05

They don't just have them in China.

China actively promoted wild animal farming for these markets (and traditional 'medicine').
19,000 farms is the number I read.

jobhunter7 · 27/03/2020 12:09

I think this crisis may be seen as China's Chernobyl.

I wonder. Apparently the government's Health Commission is now advising Chinese "traditional medicine" (including bear bile) as a treatment for COID19.

This is the second time China has released a bat virus on the world. Other countries need to stop trading with them until they ban these markets.

Bumbers · 27/03/2020 12:17

The problem is, if you try banning them, they just go underground which can exacerbate the problems and e.g. make identification and containment harder.

You need more of a societal change to actually solve the issue.

AutumnRose1 · 27/03/2020 12:47

if China can enforce the quarantine measures they've just done...

then I reckon most countries can get rid of the scourge of these markets. There will be a few underground ones but that might reduce the spread next time.

What did/do other countries do in terms of behavioural economics - or shall I just say, social shaming? That's the kind of cultural change that needs to be put into place.

ElephantLover · 27/03/2020 12:51

I saw a news article which said these are open even right now in some far-east countries. It was undercover reporting & images were fuzzy, but looked authentic. If they are operating now in the middle of this pandemic, I don't hold much hope that they will go away Confused
